  • With the changes made to professions, Engineering is one of the few that provide any benefits to lowbie characters. The other possibility being Alchemy(a skill leveling guide will be provided for that in another thread). Engineering's benefits include being to craft/equip items and some nice consumables. At skill level 200, engineers can choose to specialize in Gnomish or Goblin Engineering.
    On with the guide!
Firstly, the player should get a http://www.wowhead.com/item=40772/gnomish-army-knife or an http://www.wowhead.com/item=109253/ultimate-gnomish-army-knife. Both are usually available on the auction house for relatively inexpensive prices. Otherwise, you will need to create your own "tools". It is highly recommended that you get one of these Army knives to save on bag space and because of their shear convenience.
Secondly, I recommend that you purchase/gather all the materials you need beforehand if you plan on "power leveling" your engineering skill up in one session. All of these mats can be kept in your bank, they no longer need to be kept in your character's bags. This will save you valuable time running back and forth trying locate more material.

It is very important that when you reach the skill thresholds at 50-75 and 125-150 that you remember to learn you respective engineering skill. Whether it be Journeyman or Expert. Failing to do this may cause you to have to purchase/gather more materials.

    The material list. (approx.)

    -90 x http://www.wowhead.com/item=2841

    -30 x http://www.wowhead.com/item=2838

    -75 x http://www.wowhead.com/item=3860
    -20 x http://www.wowhead.com/item=4338

Keep in mind you may need a few more materials if you have a little bad luck raising your skill.

To begin your training to be an Engineer you need to visit an Engineering Trainer. You should visit one in old Azeroth. This is a list of them all.

    http://www.wowhead.com/search?q=Engineering+Trainer .

If you followed my recommendation above, you should already have one of the Army knives and have no need to purchase or create any other tools. If you did not buy an Army knife you will need to purchase a Blacksmith Hammer and four(4) steel bars to create a http://www.wowhead.com/item=10498 when you reach skill level 175.

    1-30
    60 x http://www.wowhead.com/item=4357 - 60 Rough Stone
You should be able to reach 38-41 with this. You will need to keep these for later.

    30 - 50
    30 x http://www.wowhead.com/item=4359 - 30 Copper Bar
You will need these for later.

Visit your trainer and learn Journeyman Engineering. This requires level 10.

    50 - 75

    30 x http://www.wowhead.com/item=4360 - 60 Rough Blasting Powder, 30 Handful of Copper Bolts
If you do not have an Army knife make an http://www.wowhead.com/item=6219 between 50-70 and keep it. (You really should have gotten that Army knife)

    75 - 90
    20 x http://www.wowhead.com/item=4364 - 20 Coarse Stone
You will need these in the next stage.

    90 - 100
    20 x http://www.wowhead.com/item=4365 - 20 Coarse Blasting Powder, 20 Linen Cloth

    100 -116
    8 x http://www.wowhead.com/item=4366/target-dummy - 16 Bronze Bar, 16 Wool Cloth

    116 -120
    4 x http://www.wowhead.com/item=4371 - 8 Bronze Bar

    120 -132
    4 x http://www.wowhead.com/item=4406 - 4 Bronze Tube, 4 Moss Agate

Visit you trainer and learn Expert Engineering. This requires level 20.

    132 -150
    30 x http://www.wowhead.com/item=4377 - 30 Heavy Stone
    and
    15 x http://www.wowhead.com/item=4375 - 30 Bronze Bar, 15 Wool Cloth

This is where is gets tricky. If you are lucky you will only need these required materials to reach 150 skill level. If not, you will need to make more. At the minimum you will need 30 http://www.wowhead.com/item=4377 and 15 http://www.wowhead.com/item=4375 for the next steps.

    150 - 160
    15 x http://www.wowhead.com/item=4382/bronze-framework - 30 Bronze Bar, 15 Medium Leather, 15 Wool Cloth
    Keep these for next stage.

    160 -175
    15 x http://www.wowhead.com/item=4384 - 30 Heavy Blasting Powder, 15 Whirring Bronze Gizmo, 15 Bronze Framework, 30 Wool Cloth
These actually find stealthies!! (make your http://www.wowhead.com/item=10498 if you did not get an Army knife)

    175 - 195
    60 x http://www.wowhead.com/item=10505 - 120 Solid Stone
Save these because you will need them later. You will only need a few. The reason we make so many is two fold. Solid stone is usuallu very cheap and Solid Blasting powder is used in a LOT of explosives. This many should get you 195.

    195 - 200
    7 x http://www.wowhead.com/item=10559 - 21 Mithril Bar
Stop making these when you reach 200. You might not need to make 7 but then again may need to make more than 7. Save them for making EXPLOSIVES!

    200 - 216
    20 x http://www.wowhead.com/item=10560 - 20 Mithril Bar, 20 Mageweave Cloth, 20 Solid Blasting Powder
    Save these. Same thing.. EXPLOSIVES!!

    215 - 225
    40 x http://www.wowhead.com/item=10561 - 120 Mithril Bar
Save these. Another material for explosives and for other fun engineering items.

    Gratz on 225 Engineering!!

    Nice guide @Allybeboba ;)
Only question I have is can anyone get a blue version of the http://www.wowhead.com/item=114943/ultimate-gnomish-army-knife? It seems to me only high level engineers can make one as it's BoP. I'd love to have the Raise Ally ability from it but not sure how I can get one.

    http://www.wowhead.com/item=109253/ultimate-gnomish-army-knife Is the BoE version.
Low level engineers have access to http://www.wowhead.com/item=7148/goblin-jumper-cables . Although, I have not used them in a long long time since all I play is healers. And when I did use them they were not very reliable.

    Good guide.

How do you get from 150-160? Whats the medium leather used for?

Perhaps also include up to 240 for our gnome friends?

It would also be nice to have a cutoff in the materials list to show where the supplies needed for 10-19 twinks who only can get 150 engineering? And perhaps the 165/240 as well?

150-160 added. It was erroneously left off. Surely level 10-19's can do a little math. To only get to 150 a player would need a bit less wool and bronze bars.
The Gnome list is on it's way as well as the guide for the two specializations quests. Perhaps in a week or two.

I'm not sure if it's optimal or not, but it gets you to 225. The advantage over the wowprofessions.com one, is that this one doesn't have you making expensive precursors for the next tier.
