I don't think they are counted as beasts. I believe the talent says "for every pet or guardian" maybe they are counted as your guardians.

This is correct. The only armor you can get at this level is the chest, wrist, legs, and the feet. You can also get weapons, a shield, and I believe an off-hand. No head, shoulder, back, or belt pieces are available at this level.

I didnt know you could do that, however I recently chose the wrong quest reward trying to gear my ret paladin, and I asked a GM to change my reward, but he gave me a hard no, he said that GM's cannot help with that unless the item you chose is unwearable my your class.
