US Official LGBT Armory Thread

The alternative is what the LGBT community has been fighting for for years; that gender is a social construction, and that you should be free to identify yourself as what you feel like.
i was wrong, i've always used "sex" and "gender" interchangeably, but it turns out sex is specific to chromos + organs, whereas gender is self-identity.

based on the above definitions the argument that gender is a social construct wouldn't effect what a doctor puts on a birth certificate because the determination is biological, ie a determination of sex.

Excactly, my point then was that the LGBT community have long and hard fought for the "sex" aspect to be less important, hence the case of the sport example would feel like a slap to the face.

it seems that your talking about gender here as it's attached to identity.

i still don't see why a doctor shouldn't make a biological determination that will be accurate for the vast majority of people.

i don't see how you could have a competitive environment if biological males could play on female sports teams.

I'm pretty sure we agree... I'm not saying those those who feel their gender and sex coincide shouldn't get their sex determined by a doctor or whatever. But for those who feel like their gender doesn't match their sex, or for instance, to use a commonly used phrase: 'feels like a woman trapped in a mans body', it must surely be hurtful to have a doctor tell you 'nop, you're a man'. Like obviously she is biologically a man, but the point is that the LGBT community have fought for the biological sex to matter less and the gender to marter more.

A bit off topic, but I'm really pissed and wanted to share whats going on in my country.

Turkey bans Istanbul gay pride due to 'security fears'

The only Muslim country that holds pride won't hold it this year in Taksim Square due to 'security concerns'. It'll either have to be held somewhere else, or it won't happen at all. :(

Gay Pride Istanbul (Turkish: Onur Yürüyüşü) is a gay pride march and LGBT demonstration held annually in Turkey's biggest city, Istanbul. The event first took place in 2003 and now occurs each year on either the last Sunday of June or the first Sunday of July, to mark the end of Istanbul pride week. About 30 people took part in the first Gay Pride Istanbul. The numbers have increased exponentially each year, reaching roughly 5,000 people by 2010. The 2011 gathering attracted over 10,000 people, therefore making Gay Pride Istanbul the biggest march of its kind in the Muslim World. The 2012 pride march, which took place on 1 July, attracted between 10,000 and 30,000 people.

Participants assemble in Taksim Square before marching the entire length of İstiklal Avenue. This is a wide pedestrian boulevard and one of Istanbul's most important public spaces, the frequent home of bayram and regional festivals.

On 30 June 2013, the pride parade attracted almost 100,000 people. The protesters were joined by Gezi Park protesters, making the 2013 Istanbul Pride the biggest pride ever held in Turkey. The 2014 pride attracted more than 100,000 people. The European Union praised Turkey that the parade went ahead without disruption. On Sunday 29 June 2015, Reuters reported that Turkish police used a water cannon to disperse the gay pride parade.

That sucks man, so close to so much violence in that part of the world I sort of understand it, I suppose it probably feels a bit like an excuse tho? I wonder if they have credible terror threats.

I think it's a bit of both, they said they are concerned for the safety of their citizens because of the terror attacks in the past year. I think it was a bit of an excuse, because they could just deploy a shitton of police officers. They didn't outright BAN pride, they just said that Taksim Square isn't suitable this year, so it'll have to take place somewhere else, maybe somewhere like Kadikoy, but historically it was always been in Taksim Square, so idk what will happen.

Most likely, people will try to do it in Taksim, and police will disperse the crowds, and Turkey will be all over the news like always.

'Gender' doesn't matter in this sports case. It is the biological differences between males and females that dictate separating them in athletic competitions.
