Solo Island Expedition on Ally as F2P/Pure-F2P/SET/NEEAT/NEESEF2PT

Brihan

Too much time spent on F2P addon dev
Greetings!

Quick post on the topic of solo Island Expedition on Ally side, so that the info doesn't get lost in the middle of discord.

Main issue is that everything related to Island Expedition (table, Flynn and vendors) don't show up for Alliance players who are on a F2P account.
For sure you can group up with a VET or a sub who will queue with you, but some people play only solo, so this info is mainly for them.

On the case of solo queuing (new from 9.1.5), you need to talk to Flynn Fairwind.
There are two ways of making him appear, both methods involve quests, so finishing or abandonning the related quests will make Flynn disappear again.

First way was shared by @Jaska on the xpoff discord.
The method is to go down the Tiragarde Sound questline up to Freehold: A Pirate's End without finishing it. This quest should be part of the 4th chapter of the story campaign (if it can be obtained before, tell me and i'll correct it).

Having this quest in your log will make Flynn appear on the docks where the Island Expedition table should be.

If you already finished all the quests from the region including Freehold: A Pirate's End, maybe you will have a second chance with the next method.

Check for that quest completion with:
/run print(C_QuestLog.IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(52148))

The second way was shared by @renyichen on the lvl20 Chinese forums, so I wanted to relay it here.
The method involves having BfA Herbalism as one of your professions, which you can get from the trainer Declan Senal in Boralus.

Next, you want to start gather plants in the region to level up your Herbalism skill to a minimum of 50. That's 49 plant nodes to collect, doesn't take long.

Finally, come back to Declan Senal, he will have some quests for you. Pick up the quest Cultural Significance. At this point, Flynn will have decided to come back to his spot.

Unfortunately, if you already completed that quest, I don't have another way for you ...

Check for that quest completion with:
/run print(C_QuestLog.IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(51365))

Few notes:
  • You need to have completed the quest The Smoking Gun before Flynn can appear anywhere. It's the first quest when you choose Tiragarde Sound on the Scouting map.
  • For the second method, if you drop BfA Herbalism, the quest will be automatically removed from your log upon your next relog.
So yeah, main downside of second method is to require Herbalism as profession, but it's quick to reach the requirements for unlocking the quest.
First method might not be relevant for old characters who already quested intensively. But there is a second chance by going the Herbalist way, as it's herbalism and that the quest gives little advantage, I can hope not many solo F2P did it already.

And few pictures to end up that post :)
Flynn is located on the docks of Boralus, in front of the second boat.

When talking to him, you can queue for solo Island Expeditions.

Amazing find. Also wondering, if a person who finished both quests was in a group with another who did not, and joined his phase, would they still be able to queue?

So, from my testings, it seems that the phasing with Flynn is personnal, no matter with who you group up and what party sync you're in.
Moreover, if anyone in a group queues for "Solo Island Expedition", it'll launch an expedition for the number of players in the group that everyone will queue for too. Can be a 2-players island expedition for example. Idk what happens if you try that while being 4+ people in the group (as islands are 3 persons max)

Can we spend our Seafarer's Dubloons ? Because I can't seem to find the vendors (like this one) anywhere? Are they also phased out?
They are indeed, on ally side we don't have access to the vendors, and that's like the only reason why most people do expeditions at lvl20 on horde side

Great post.

Just a heads up - if you're using the first method to get him to spawn, make sure you don't abandon the quest. I did it to test if the NPC stays there, but he disappeared shortly after and now it is impossible to pick up the quest again. Visited all of the possible locations where you could start the quest (according to Wowhead) and it seems that Flynn doesn't go back to any of his previous locations. Contacted a GM, asked them to give me the quest, they told me the only way to pick it up again is to do Island Expedition questline to get Flynn to phase as intended.

Alternatively, he might be able to offer the quest if you get him to spawn with the herbalism method. Then you can just pick up the Freehold dungeon quest and drop herbalism. Personally, I am not too motivated to test those things, since we can't spend the currency anyway.

Nonetheless, very cool discovery. Thanks for sharing!

So i cant remember if this was pre 9.1.5 but i had no problems queueing up for expeditions nor finding the vendors, however does the "heirloom" gear scale down to our levels? is it any good? can it gem proc? etc etc (the stuff u buy from the vendors).

Yes it scales, but poorly, you can get ilvl 24 gear from it. No, I dont think it can proc socket, but even if could proc tertiary+socket, it has lower stat budget than the draenor ilvl 25 or legion ilvl 28 gear. In conclusion way too expensive, both time and currency wise, and not worth it. Only purpose I see is transmogs, but even those have alternative sources.

That’s cuz you are a vet or linked f2p with islands unlocked.
[doublepost=1638141302,1638141232][/doublepost]Also @Brihan why not include NEESEF2PT in the title? We feel excluded.
Indeed, I forgot about that community of twinks, adjusted the title :FrogeConcern:

So for the freehold quest, it's sharable. So even tho once you abandoned the quest you can't get back to take it (that's what I did on my main), you are able to get the quest shared by someone else.
I just finished testing that now, and I have the quest back on my main (never finished it before). So all is not lost ;)

Sorry to be a pain, but when does this quest pop up? I'm 7/7 in Tirgarde Sound and I don't recall seeing it......
What are some of the lead up quests?
It's when questing in that zone:

There are like 2 side quests asking to kill parrots/pirates + The main quest asking for collecting moss, ending finally with going to blow up some ships (first by boat, then by riding a gryffin). When you finished blowing up the boats, Flynn should have the quest iirc.

If you already quested there, check you didn't do the quest already with the script in the first post.
If you didn't do it, either Flynn is there and can give you the quest, either he's not there and that'd be because you previously abandonned the quest, and would need someone else to share it to you.

Thanks Brihan. I’ll go back and check that area out. There is a chance I dropped it some time ago. I hope I didn’t.
Otherwise I’ll have to quest with another toon to share it…..
That script says I haven’t done it.

Update: I'm not sure what occurred, but I did the Tirgarde quest line on my DK, but whether I changed timelines half way or just missed picking up the quest, it seemed I was no longer able to find the quest giver. Just very strange, I'd say there is a chance that the quest phases out at some point if you don't pick it up.

I was able to have it shared though, and Flynn does appear again.
Thanks Brihan, appreciate the info on this one.

Just a quick heads-up for any other stubborn F2P players that don't want to create a horde alt to get access to the dubloon chests.

Can now confirm mounts do drop at lvl 20 on normal mode.
Just got this hairy boy after a few weeks of doing about 2-4 islands per day.
