Haven't played in a while - did a patch come out recently? What's the state of 20 twinking right now

Anything significant change?

Too lazy to grind for greens indefinitely. Last i checked in it was supposedly all healers and hunters.

you get about ~20% quality games over a long period of time. it could be 10% for one day, but it could be 30% for another day.

20% is a very rough estimate, but it's not too bad, definitely not "slam-dick-into-the-door" level bad.

20% goes up if you are good, 20% goes down if you are bad.

One of the thing that deters me from coming back is the barriers to entry. Its not like grinding crates in bgs or something its grinding hyperspawn mobs endlessly for godly greens. I like how much different stuff you can do with builds in this expansion and the fact they added new bgs etc but the greens are brutal and i think the twinking scene would have been better off without the level 19 gear being available. I don't think blizz really intended for them to spawn in the way they do(Greens out ilvl'ing dungeon gear?) but even if it came to their attention and they cared they'd probably screw up fixing it.

As for game quality it sounds like the usual in BFA.

if you don't know what to play, i would do a prot paladin with https://www.wowhead.com/item=7375/green-whelp-armor + https://www.wowhead.com/item=38912/enchant-chest-exceptional-mana

spec into https://www.wowhead.com/spell=152261/holy-shield and https://www.wowhead.com/spell=216855/guarded-by-the-light

stack talasite gems, and vers gears, get both engi helm and trinket for secondary

use https://www.wowhead.com/item=28311/revenger?bonus=6710 + sader

aim to cast FoL at least once every 6 seconds.

thanks to @Lateraldrop who made me realize that prot actually could be low tier B build instead of F.

Nothing changed. 9.1 is still not out. Let's hope it comes out late June or early July (who knows if it will).

As regards the state of the bracket, it seems to me that the honeymoon period for the new expansion, including for 20s, is over. Things became more streamlined with less variety. There seem to be less players queueing, queue times increased. It's all somewhat apathetic.

That's my 2c.

the idea that greens are necessary to play is a myth.
Completely agree, I have a blast on my dungeon geared enhance sham.
But then if you want to min/max/bis grind you have the OPTION to do so, ie if your class bis secondary stat is mastery then you wont be able to get it on TBC dungeon gear

I mean, sure, you can say greens aren't necessary, and they're probably not, but if you're going to get talasites/other gems you're probably going to need to sub at some point. And if you're subbing, you're going to end up asking why you're not using at least good greens and that's why i hesitate really - not counting all the 'grandfathered' bs that exists but shouldn't.

If those are your concerns, none of thats going to change. Gems are the gearing meta for the foreseeable future, ilvl 28s offer a high number of sought after secondaries and GFd gear is as old as twinking itself.

Looks like twinking just may not be for you.

I'll also mention that having the absolutely perfect BIS gear with tertiaries and gem slots is nice, but neither necessary nor practical. Just a 20 with dungeon blues and proper enchants can have a good matchup against a leveler or another casual vet/F2P. You'll get smashed by the hypothetical perfect twink, but you probably aren't going up against him and almost certainly aren't going to find the whole game coming down to how you do against him 1v1.

You're not going to win all the time. Even if you were the ultimate twink sometimes you'd queue against a premade and all you can do is eat the loss. Do PvP if it interests you, find other things to focus on if you'd rather do those instead. But don't get too caught up in the idea that you have to be the absolute best at something in order take part at all.
