lvl 28 pieces

How much stronger are they, compared to say your BC piece with sockets.

I'm asking because I was finally able to play the bracket a bit. And my most geared toons solely have socketed pieces. I fair decently well. Against other twinks, I lose some, win some, fair enough.

That said, I faced some twinks that I could barely hurt, if at all.
Some have the lvl49 artifact weapon, that's a bump I'm will not able to overcome, so that's that.
But most of them have close to full lvl 28 pieces (and no lvl49 artifact).

So I'm wondering, is the grind for those necessary, to be kinda competitive? I'd be happy being close to competitive, if the gap isnt too wide (I'd rather spend time in BGs past some point, than grind forever). But it looks like the gap is pretty big.

If so, how bad is it? I may have to reduce the number of characters I wanted to gear up, if it's bad.

it's honestly not as bad as you think, you gain more hp/stats using tbc socket gear. it's only really if you want higher secondary stats like vers, haste etc or going for a high mastery build the ilvl 28 boe's are perfered. it really depends on how you decide to gem up though, a lot of f2p's are using +3 int or 2agi 2 crit so vets who use 2 stam 2 int/agi or the +6 stam ones will have a lot more hp obviously.

you're able to get a full set of socket gear without using any ilvl 28 boe's if you're willing to do the BFA dungeon grind for them.

Here's a look at my Vet vs my F2P warrior. Vet is pretty well stacked with ilvl 28 and F2P only has one (not very good) cloak. I actually have an ilvl 28 belt, boots and chest on my vet too, but opt for the TBC socket pieces in those slots.

Youll notice that the difference is like 3 str, 2 stam and a different distribution of the same amount of secondaries. That said, you'll also notice I'm not using ilvl 28 neck or rings on my vet, which would open up 3 more sockets. My gearing preferences are to stack stam, so thats 18 stam more that my vet could *theoretically* have. [side note: There's also a possibility that Legion dungeons may eventually start dropping socket/tert procs for low levels, at which point the builds even back up but thats speculation]

The biggest difference is that getting to my current secondary balance was a lot easier on the Vet, given that flexing around ilvl 28 pieces is relatively easy. On the F2P it takes hunting down very specific pieces.

tl;dr - I play both interchangeably and maybe Im just not good enough or way too brain damaged to tell, but there's no real difference in performance. Maybe better warriors out there really notice the difference of 4% less vers or 5% more crit but I certainly dont.

Ty for your answers! It is/was an honest question, I'm just not versed enough into gear, hence why I ask.

Well, it's comforting to know that all the time invested wasnt for naught!

The bad news is that all that time was in a rogue! And a prot pally, which seems stronger. And that I probably suck, but that's not really news. :p
Some of it is probably bad matchups as well, not sure. Alright, back to it, thanks for the insights!

@Chops Now that's a perfect response, using actual this -vs- that comparison. I had figured the iLvL 28 madness was little more than that, madness, and you just essentially proved as much.

Min/Maxers will certainly want every single item to be the EXACT BiS but that also doesn't mean that Character is necessarily superior.

I think there's really something to be said for ilvl 28s with tertiary stats. I have dreams about like... full leech locks or a full speed warrior. But I also (as I mentioned) think we'll see legion pieces start procing socket/terts in like 9.1 or something, so the gap will remain somewhat small.

I see. Well, I'll raise my glass to that prospect then! I'd rather farm some Legion dungeons than do the ilvl 28 grind.

Indeed, a full set of Tertiary gear that's on par with fully Socketed Dungeon/Crafted gear (Main Stat / Stam / Secondaries) would truly be BiS if for nothing else the Utility of it.

some kind of weird oversight in the scaling

They never did tho.... WoD did not either, so far as normal dungeon drops. Socket procs for those xpacs were in heroic.

Normal WoD at least could go epic and/or tertiary, legion never did a damn thing (so far as I recall, and I ran a lot for 99)

Right, as soon as you hit level cap they proc like crazy... but before then, nada.

It's not a bad side note, it's useful information and that's always good.
