PTR Why you should level before the patch (Chromie Time/XP lock issues)

I have a level 40 character that I pushed to 40 to train the mount speed and importing her to the PTR makes her level 17. At 17, I can enter and exit Chromie Time normally, while my XP is locked.

Unlocking my XP to level to 19 and then re-locking it removes my ability to enter Chromie Time. Likewise, entering Chromie Time removes my ability to enable the XP lock.

This effectively means that if you want to use Chromie Time, you will need to be XP locked when the patch hits and leave the XP lock in place, so I am planning to level all of my characters to the level I want them to be at permanently prior to the patch next week.

I suspect Blizzard will need to fix this, as it effectively grandfathers Chromie Time for twinks that are XP locked prior to the patch, but we all know we're Blizzard's red-headed step-child, so I wouldn't bank on it.

Thought you could just go to war boards to start quests

Tests/Results:

Copy Character with XP disabled - Enter Chromie Time > Change Chromie Time > Exit Chromie Time > Re-enter Chromie Time > All good.

Copy Character with XP disabled - Enter Chromie Time > Disable XP lock > Unable to re-enable XP lock > Exit Chromie Time > Re-enable XP lock > Unable to re-enter Chromie Time.

Copy Character with XP disabled - Disable XP lock > Enter Chromie Time > Unable to re-enable XP lock > Exit Chromie Time > Re-enable XP lock > Unable to re-enter Chromie Time.

Copy Character with XP enabled - Enable XP lock > Unable to enter Chromie Time. Disable XP lock > Enter Chromie Time > Unable to re-enable XP lock.

Copy Character with XP enabled - Enter Chromie Time. Unable to enable XP lock.

It appears that these flags are mutually exclusive once one of them has been set after the patch.

Yes, though the call boards only give you three options. You can create a new option by accepting one of the three (at least until your quest log fills up), but the most important aspect of this for my use is the ability to queue for dungeons in a specific expansion. With Chromie time disabled, my only queue options are BfA dungeons and Coren. There may also be other elements of timewalking campaigns that I'm leaving out.

Woah. I’ve had a few issues on my xplocked toon with chromie time. Thought it was a bug due to quests not being completed in a certain timeline before leaving

to note: I originally copied a vet 20 (10 on PTR) which I subsequently locked exp on.

this was all prior to them even rolling out chromie on ptr

have you submitted this as a bug report? Really seems like you should.

I did. But I highly doubt this is a priority for them.

As far as I can tell right now, the only important effect is losing the ability to change your dungeon finder queue menu (for which there is something of a workaround). There's some confusing verbiage on the Wowhead page about the zone scaling, but I don't think it's actually effected by whether or not you're in Chromie Time. Being in Chromie Time puts you into a different phase, which may or may not be useful (for finding rare mob/resource spawns).

The workaround for the dungeon finder queue is to group with someone else in the timewalking campaign you want, which then allows your group to queue for whichever dungeon set you choose.

the adventure guide menu also has all the quests

honestly i think the bug part of this is being able to enter chromie time on a toon that has there xpoff before the squish.

Good to know, thanks. I always skip right past that stupid screen.

Entirely possible, but I'm under the impression from others that this was the case before and it was "fixed" (though I don't have any way to validate that assessment, since I can't go back in time to test it).

IMO, the entire point of the XP eliminator NPCs is to be able to perfect a character at a given level, and I don't see why they would block people from accessing Chromie Time with their XP off.
