In Highschool EVERYONE knew I played WoW, but no one really teased me for it

Sure my GF gave me hell, but some of my friends even started getting into it. Now one of them is one of my best friends in-game
But to answer your question, I think it is because of the way it's portrayed in the media. Usually on TV, or YouTube videos, or what have you, the average WoW player is a 16-17 year old dirty ugly geek with severe acne, no friends, and awkward social skills. While this MAY be true for some WoW players, it certainly is not for the most of them.
Another outstanding point I may refer you to is the WoW advertisements. They all stress the importance of "Questing", or "Regaining your honor and remaining loyal to your faction". In reality WoW is really just about hanging out, killing shit, and killing time. If more people knew this, then the average nerdy WoW player stereotype would absolutely dissipate
