Why are the WC sets used so much?

I don't see why the fang set (or the mail set) from WC is used so much. Are there set bonuses really that much better than the stats gained from using other stuff?

people generally like having bigger numbers show up when they pew pew so they go with the wc sets. I'm all for smaller numbers so I can heal easier. Be the change you want to see in the world!
 
I guess I just prefer optimization and balanced builds to glass cannon builds. Even in classes like mage and boomie, I'd rather have vers/x green lens over 27int.

There is nothing to prefer. Fang set is simply the best set and if you use anything else you are just handicapping yourself. At 29 for atleast a boomie as far as I know you would only use a 2 set (gloves/legs), because the defiler belt/boots are better.

surely gloves + chest from the fang set for boomy is much better since you dont lose the boa leg enchant. correct me if im wrong

I suppose it would depend what you have for chest/leg options. BG crate chest + fang legs vs fang chest + BoE legs + enchant vs fang chest + BG crate legs.

But I'm not sure I agree with the presumption that the AB belt/boots are better. Alone, they are great pieces of gear. But the 5pc set bonus is a lot of int.

Full fang set at 29:
Chest - 8int/13stam/7haste/4verse
Gloves - 9int/9stam
Belt - 6int/9stam/5crit/3verse
Legs - 8int/13stam/5crit/6haste
Boot - 6int/9stam/3haste/5verse
Set bonus - 7int/3haste/4int/10int
Total: 58int/53stam/10crit/19haste/12verse


AB stuff:
Belt - 11int/10stam/11verse
Boots - 5int/10stam/4crit/11verse

So you'd be losing 14 int from the set bonus. From the items themselves you'd gain 4int/2stam/14verse and lose 1crit/3haste. So is switching those 2 pieces worth losing 10 int/1crit/3haste to gain 2stam/14 verse? I guess that frees you up to also switch a 3rd fang piece out to lose the 3 haste...but are any chest pieces/legs/gloves good enough to make up that difference?
 
Dont think the full set is always best. If intellect is main stat it could be but not sure.

Gloves are probably BiS for any class/spec with main stat intellect. And ill tell you why :

because leatherworking enchant 11+ stamina on gloves (before soulbound of course) paired with another piece of the set gives 5+ intellect set bonus.

For the second piece of the set I suggest chest piece instead of legs because:

chest you can put 7+ all stats on and compared to other chest gear its pretty close.

leg set piece cannot be enchanted with leatherworking because they Bind On Pickup.
