What is the facination with Arena?

It's all about destroying egos, and flexing my already abnormally large epeen.

E-Peen is a contraction referring to one's Internet-wang. For example, mine is huge, and I regularly use it to slap people.

In order to flex it, I must regularly keep up with belittling others that I find inferior, and make posts about how great I am.

Ahhh- well then, that makes sense, from what I've seen. Thanks for the education.

It seems like this is a very passionate subject, on both sides. I now see where the attraction comes from (it seems to come from the same place as dueling; another pastime I’ve never really gotten into) and what it’s for (hone skills, build confidence and refine 1v1 strats).

A big thanks to everyone that’s taken the time to comment! It's fascinating from a human condition point of view.

Arenas are for twinks with tunnel vision.

i have tunnel vision, and i suck at arena. and at the same time, i'm good at WSG. at least at flag carrying

Well, With arena's and nerdraging players, I have a bone to pick with.

Let's get started on 2v1's.

I solo queue an arena, i get into the arena. OH, It appears to only be me versus 2 other players on the opposing team, so i think to myself, If it's 2xMelee i should have no real difficulty, BUT NO, The opponents i get are wither Hunter/Hunter pair or Shaman/Priest. The only combo's that i can't even touch without getting facefucked or Purg/Shock spammed.

I take a loss as it's handed to me, But it really gets me irritated and i think to myself i don't really have a right to be angry, I did queue arena to fight and i got my fight.

That's what really boils my blood :)

i've had a person complain on NOT 2v1ing. it was pretty funny.

if you're solo Qing 2v2, prepare to 2v1. you Q'd for something that requires 2 people to play. if you want a fair match, set something up or Q with another person.

WSG is the same way, you're Qing alone for something that requires 10 people. but most of the time it's 10v10 anyways because most people solo Q it. but there are still times where it's 5v10...

Yeah, Hence the reason why i mentioned i had no right no complain :D

ok, i wanna know something, who thinks that the environment here cannot be used to your own advantage ?

i mean LOS lot sof em, get real, if they LOS you, they are LOSing themselves too !

it goes both ways. my hunter friend was bragging about that, he was doing arena and couldn't defeat that druid turning around poles, i was like how the hell can't you do anything about that ? he said i just can't and then i told him which trap you use, he always said immolation to bring da pain, i said big mistake. frost all the way its your best friend.

seriously, it is such mistakes that makes the game boring and stupid in fights. the environments can be used by one but that doesn't mean you can't use it too. if one is whack enough to think this game PVP is all about staying in front of the opponent and hope he doesn't react then that person deserves to die. a melee class like rogue, warriors or even pally don't just stand there in front of you, they actually turn around you, why because it makes dodge and parry not working if they get a back hit. not to mention how they can get a a clear 2 second of no hit if the guy do not follow them cause of his playing style.

i'm sure you already knew about that though. but seriously, arena right now are the closest thing in controlled PVP, no hiding, no way of just staying there you always gotta move, you can't turtle and you can't come out of their until the opponents team are gone. i think its the closest to fair advantage !

when it comes to teams, many strategies works, of course it depends on which class you have in your team, but you're bound to find a match against whom you just can't win. its all about judging...

the best exemple i seen is season one top rated team.

have you notice it was druid/hunter combo ?

how come that hunter was the only hunter in the top 50

surely not just of luck, i'm sure he knew how to play, he knew what to do to help is druid friend and i'm quite sure he, like the other teams used his environment to his advantage too !

i just think arena are well made for that. true gladiator fight, you have to fight your way thru because you can't win by defending only. its a good balance in defensive and offensive strategies. and tell yourselves that i was like you, a non-believer when it came to arenas, until i realised that my playstyle wasn'T correct at all !

To quickly anwser your first question ArthurianKnight, warlock > mage, sure the mage could pole hump the warlock..but the warlock is just laughing as his dots kill the mage.

Any thing that requires a permanent LoS is instantlly at a dis-advantage not even comparing the class combinations, gear levels, talents, or skill of each player.

warlocks stronger then mages, mages kills fasters then warlocks you know... its easy using arcane missile which is by far the best ability the mages have.

then again you're comparing casters classes together, each class have their own defaults, warlocks aren't all that great either ! annoying for certain, but strong... not really ! and did i mention mages can actually decurse which is making the warlocks debuff off ?

in most cases,

warlock > mage

arcane missles is in no way the best mage spell.

yes there is decurse, that just gets one dot out of the way though. it's difficult to dps a lock through drain life, healthstone, a pet, fear, etc

Druiddroid already covered that part so onward we go!

Hunter vs Rogue, in most cases the rogue has the advtange, its easy enough to keep out of LoS for a serpent sting to go off resulting in vanish, shadow meld, stealth, etc.

Warrior vs Elemental shaman, the shaman has no way to get the warrior off of them besides thunderstorm at pretty much max level, even then a intercept is in order, combine that with all the silences/stuns and its GG.

Theres alot more examples, Anything that requires LoS or open space is at a major disadvantage in arenas, they are just to damn small with to many annoyances.

I'm going to throw this out because I don't get it, but I want to understand. What is the allure of arenas at the 19’s and 29’s? From what I can tell, they’re not officially tracked, they removed all stat buffs (Sharpening stones, Rum stam buffs and party buffs) and you can’t use pots.

Is it a “honing your skills” kind of thing, or is it a trash-talking thing? Both? Neither? What’s the deal?

I don't mean any offense by this, but your question reminds me of some of the honest questions by people asking "why twink, you don't get anything out of it". I don't see how buffs and tracking are a reason to do or not do anything as a twink?

Edit: It's simply another way to play the game, yes?

Indeed it is- an no offense taken- the difference between my post, and the "twink" question is I really want to know and understand the motivation, not tear down the experience. For me, to find another’s reasoning sometimes can help me refocus a interest in something I don't “get” right away.

A perfect example is PvP in general. Up until recently, I “hated” PvP and would go to great lengths to avoid it (I’m on a PvE server). I always wondered what the fascination with PvP was, and when I tired it on my mains (in BC days) all that ever happened was me getting pwned over and over. I made Rayekk a while back because I was bored (have hade leveled one of every class, sans priest) and thought maybe it’d be fun. Bad solo experiences once again turned me off to PvP and he became my bank toon. Then I hit on it: I needed a partner. That’s made all the difference, and now I can’t imagine the game without my PvP.

I’m looking for the same kind of “Ah-ha!” moment for arenas.

Really what drives people to play w/e part of the game can be completelly diffrent, its all about finding YOUR reason neh?

Personally I loved the lower levels of PvP, I had characters at 29/39 before the word "twink exsisted"...a twink back in the day had fiery on weapon, 5 sta on boots, 5 sta on bracer, 24 armor to glove, etc.

Then gradually as the word "twink" developed you move along in that direction and learn to max a character.

I guess my orignal reason for twinking was the love of low lvl pvp as well as 5 of my best friends on wow back in the day loving it to, the 6 of us rolled around and had a blast.
