Weapon Speed (top end dmg) vs. Dps for rogue

So, I know previously the 3.6 speed weapons were BiS for rogues for max dps. I had read somewhere that this had changed?

Is it now based on top end damage or dps? I am debating whether to keep using the 3.6 speed rare mace I have on or to farm out an epic 1h sword for higher dps.

Thanks in advance!

Ability damage is calculated on weapon DPS, not weapon dmg. A higher dps = higher ability damage.

Slow mainhand at this point is good for ppm enchants but if you're running a rppm enchant or static stat enchant, you'll want the higher dps weapon.

This but its hard to argue against the landslide/ds proc-rates with mace.

Well.. I just tested my slow mace vs the higher dps epic sword I just got to proc and even my sinister strike had higher dmg with the 3.6spd lower dps.

So confirmed slow wep is better for proc rate AND ability dmg??

o_O

Seriously? Dammit. Can you provide screens of the tool tip difference and weapons? I'm curious of the difference in top end, agi, etc. Not doubting you, just this is the first time I have heard of lower DPS weapons producing higher ability damage and I'm nosey

Its because of the speed. Higher low end and top end dmg but the dps displays lower because of the low speed. Since moves are instant the speed doesn't matter. The only thing the dps would effect is your auto attack dmg which I doubt makes up much of your overall damage. I know this works the same with prot warriors.

Can maybe upload screenshots later :)

rare 3.6 > epic 2.6 for 2 reasons
higher ability damage with 3.6 speed weps, your sinister strike will do more with 3.6 you can test it
also landslide is PPM, so a slow wep is insanely good for landslide procs

Aye that makes sense. I was just under the impression that dps was they went to for calculating ability damage. I SWEAR that was mentioned in the patch when they normalized weapon speeds.

And it's true at 20. Maybe the same thing that caused the weapon to not have it's speed normalized also causes it's weapon damage and not it's DPS to be the factor

yall are daft, ability dmg is calculated through weapon dps, thats why my sinister strike has higher dmg with daggers than other swords, letting me play double dagger outlaw completely viably. this is a change that happened in bfa i think, but i found it out after i didnt get an epic MH that wasnt a dagger.
You obviously don't have a 3.6 spd wep to compare with. Very arrogant. Tisk tisk..

I mean, a 2.6 dps weapon has higher weapon damage than a 1.8 dagger, but the ability damage is calculated off speed
Regardless of what you say now, I have personally confirmed this: 3.6 speed 1handed mace with 6.7 dps has higher ability dmg than a 2.6spd 1 handed axe with 7.5 dps. Believe what you want, but what I just stated is a fact as of like 5 hours ago.

Nice find, got any screens?
What mace u using?

The normalized weapon damage for instant attacks is:

normalized_damage = base_weapon_damage + (X * Attack Power / 14)
where X is:

  • 1.7 for daggers
  • 2.4 for other one-handed weapons
  • 3.3 for two-handed weapons
  • 2.8 for ranged weapons
The dps on the weapon means nothing, base weapon damage is a random role between top and low end, then applied to the normalized formula.
