Twinkinfo aka North Korea

Legend
why are potential new members of the TI community being rejected for the most stupid reasons?

Thank you for registering at the TwinkInfo.com Forums | World of Warcraft WoW Twinks
However, reading through past posts about you and your character, you do not seem fit to be a member here at TwinkInfo.com
We highly suggest that you start treating other people in real life, as well as in-game.

youre essentially turning away people before theyve ever had the opportunity of using this forum over some bullshit you read on a rant thread

this is north korea

no doubt i will be silenced but i felt that the community needed to be aware of what really happens behind the scenes

The main reason this is alarming is that the public ban list was made to supposedly increase transparency, yet this sort of situation is still invisible because such accounts don't even have the chance to get banned.

This is a feature only Silinrul Shane and Broken can see and utilize. If you have a problem with it, talk to one of them. Making threads in this manner and with this attitude (such rebel, much revolt) is only asking for trouble and giving moderators a reason to take action against your account. Therefore, you're the reason why moderators need to enforce the CoC.

That's like stabbing a sleeping bear and then crying to everyone about how violent the bear is after it's ripped your arm off.

This thread's already closed but I'm going to add my thoughts since I was tagged.

This is above the moderator's paygrade. I have never seen this message before, we are not involved in approving accounts, and thus nobody in this thread can corroborate whether the quoted text is even genuine. Clearly it didn't come from your own experience, Skeezin, since you're already registered here, which means you're posting it on behalf of someone else, likely a previously banned member. I don't imagine that I have to remind you guys what happens when users post on behalf of banned users. But that aside, without any explanatory context this comment is just hearsay and intended to be inflammatory.

This is Shane's private message board, and he can tell anyone anything anytime. If you are in contact with someone who has issues with the decisions that Shane makes, then that person needs to talk to Shane about it. You seem like a decent guy, Skeezin, so I would recommend that you don't get yourself inserted in the middle of it, because this has all sorts of violations written on it (discussing staff actions and posting for banned members, for two) and you really don't need that hanging around your neck. Just be cool, don't get involved in other people's beefs, and tell your acquaintance to email Shane if he wants to talk about things like this. And tell him to stop trying to recruit people to be his message-boys too, because by doing so, he is only going to end up screwing over decent people. Ask Dorigon, he should know full well what that feels like.

Edited to add: You are all more than welcome to PM me, as always, if you want to talk about it. But per the CoC we can't let this thread go on.

Why?

It's because of all the people that were circumventing their bans, spamming vulgar content and giving people on the forums a hard time. We were literally deleting pornography on a daily basis before this precaution was implemented.

It's for your own and the whole forum's safety. I seriously have no idea what rant thread you're talking about.

It's a very light screening process. We literally just check the IP a person registered with. If it's matching a previously banned member or it's masked by some VPN, then we'll obviously remove them.

On average, out of 20 new accounts, 2-3 may be spam bots and there may be a single ban dodger. A very small portion of new accounts are denied.

That automated message is a part of vBulletin. I can understand how it might give off the wrong impression or cause misunderstandings. I'll talk to Shane about that and try to see if it can be altered.

As for your friend, did he register from school / work? Tell him to try again from home and avoid using any proxy / VPN (at least when he registers). We won't be denied as long as his IP isn't suspicious.

I want to add, that only Admins (Shane, Silinrul and myself) can approve / deny new accounts. Please, don't give the Mods a hard time over this.

Re-opened thread and moved to tavern. It's unlikely we'll disable this feature any time soon but I'm still open to hearing what you guys think on how we can improve this.

i understand why you take these procedures but when youre literally shutting out legitimate new members as well in the process something is obviously wrong

i have contacted my friend and told him to try and register again, thank you for clearing this up

North Koreas not that bad of a place to live in, very hospitable people over there.

I apologise about the delayed update. Lots of school work lately.

I've written down a revised email for members that are "denied".

Greetings,

You are receiving this email to inform you that your application for registering onto Twinkinfo has been denied, the reason being one or more of the following listed below:
  • You may be a banned member
  • You may be a spam bot
In case you think you're neither of the above, it's possible that your IP address acidentally matches that of someone who is. This is often caused by using public devices (for example, computers at school / office) or by masking your IP address (by using a proxy or VPN).

We recommend you attempt to register once more from your own private device and network, without using any tools to mask your IP address. We need to make sure you're not someone else when you register on our website. Afterwards, you're more than welcome to access Twinkinfo whichever way you're comfortable with.

Take care.
Twinkinfo Staff

It gives a better explanation of why members are denied and how to avoid it if you're innocent. And, I hope, we don't come off as condescending bullies anymore.

Tell me if you think any other info should be added or if a point could use more elaboration.

*Still has to be finalized and implemented.*

People learn from mistakes and harsh actions. I've never been banned, but if I were, I would seriously consider thinking before posting. It only makes people better posters.

And as far as arguing and insulting. I get it, not everybody shares the same views. But speak to a user as you would speak person irl. One could only hope you don't bad mouth people on a day to day basis. Simply acknowledge them, or go to another thread.

In all honesty guys, this has to deal with an import that came over from the old site. I didn't realize that it sent out that e-mail context when a user registration was denied.

I literally go through an entire user moderation queue on a daily basis and vet each and every registration. The ones are denied are prior banned users looking to circumvent or spam bots.

If there is a registration that you think was valid, please let me know what the username was and I will take a look.

In the meantime, I will edit that e-mail context. Thanks for the heads up!

I think this screening process is clearly working, the quality of posts keeps going up, less bullshit but still fun and more useful.

- It's good to have conversations about these things.
