You can do pretty well with anything, play what you want and don't worry too much about it. The 8.1 changes probably won't be a huge shakeup. Class balance is pretty decent outside the few OP specs, the lower tier ones aren't bad.

Yep the only change is that disc will drop out of god tier in to just top tier.

Depends what you want to do. If you just want to queue randoms and pug stomp, you can play literally whatever you want. If you want to be really competitive in wargames the list gets a bit smaller, if you want to be really competitive in arena the list gets smaller yet.

I think this is reversed, in pick up play it's really hard for classes with minimal defensives or niche playstyles to really shine. In competitive wargame play this can be mitigated through coordination and peels/heals.

Arena list is definitely the smallest meta.

By pug stomps I mean random bgs. You can definitely still feel like a god while playing a good number of tier 4 specs in random bgs. I thought it should be a consideration because plenty of people just play twinks to step on some levelers' throats/enjoy the odd skirmish against other twinks. I agree with what you said about pickup wargames vs. more formal team vs. team stuff.

Ye survival was good but it wasnt the best spec but it was easy and thus made for good FotM material. FotM isnt about what's the best its about what best in the hands of a retard.

No it was still just retard proof. 2v2 doesnt allow for healers and healers was the easiest way to counter survivals. Anyway boomy has been strongest class in both those brackets in every patch since MoP.
