Skills: How much do they help?

I just bought Kang for my Warrior after I switched to Arms. After my first BG (and seeing that our Holy priest out dpsed me) I realized I needed to increase my skills in 2H Axes (I was formerly Prot so I hadn't used a 2H weapon before). The only way I could figure out how to do this was to grind away in Uldamann to increase my skills and minimize any XP gains... however, here's my question:

I noticed that my Gun skill was also 1/245 (I didnt use a gun obviously when lvling up) but in the BGs I usually hit someone when I'm snared, so how much does the skill really matter in a BG (since you can't increase your skill in a BG maybe not much?)

On a slightly unrelated note, my skills are 240/245 for Defense.. it it worth trying to get that to 245/245?

Weapon Skill doesn't matter in PvP. You won't see your 'real crit' on the armory/character pane until you max your skill out, but in PvP it gets maxed out automatically.

Even though it doesn't matter I still level my weapon skills, just to have a nice armory :p Easiest way is to spam hamstring on low level mobs, you can run through the Stockades as Alliance, or go into Ragefire Chasm as Horde.

For PvE that's true. But in PvP your skill is already maxed out, so so is your crit.

That makes sense (which means I didn't need to grind up my weapon skill), however, when I first used Kang in the BG I hardly hit anything (or so it seemed.. altho, maybe I was distracted since I was writing some macros to weapon swap and pop some abilities at first) but it sure seemed like I didn't hit as much until I leveled up my 2H axe skills.

afaik weapon skill is "capped" in pvp, but if you go lvl ur skill you should find your self hitting harder. at least i've noticed that in the past on various twinks. i always go out of my way to lvl up skill on grey mobs to cap it and increase the damage/crit, not like it takes too long anyways.

I never used 2H maces on my 19 warrior until BG time. Swingin' around [item]Smite's Mighty Hammer[/item] with a 2H Mace skill of 1.

Do you have max hit at this level? That might actually be your problem, rather than skill. You're using Kang like I do on my pally, and you're probably running into the same problem I do with lack of hit rating.

gear, consumables, spec, buffs, and glyphs are the only things that will affect your toon in pvp

I think that might be the prob..i switched from Prot to Arms to check out Juggernaut since everyone was talking about it and really im not geared or enchanted for hit ..I'm going to a diff armor set and chants to see how that helps.

Dude, juggernaut is disgustingly overpowered currently in this bracket, coupled with taste for blood... If you get the hit rating for it you'll be dropping people left and right; it really is kind of ridiculous. My pally is fairly well geared as ret and my buddy is a sick geared arms warrior (formerly fury as he loved the spec) but he did nearly triple the damage I did in a bg and it wasn't even a drawn out bg, it was a quick 3 cap win for alliance... Btw ignore the sig for my pally it doesn't take into consideration talents for the crit, it should be at 22.38% AP is also higher when I log in and check the character screen.

Maxing ur defense is quite necessary, it's not maxed in pvp...

I still like prot better than arms. Can survive so much more...

speaking of prot vs arms...i was messing around the other day (as arms) and put on ribsplitter of power + wall of the dead instead of my BoA or exe. cleaver and i have to say it hasnt been that bad. have just over 3700hp, 767 ap, and 21.35 crit unbuffed/in battle stance. not the same burst of course, but i still hit hard and crit relatively high along with the added benefits of adding block to the table, increasing armor and more avoidance/mitigation.

if you have unrelenting assault, pop shield block and spam the shit out of hunters and various melee classes with revenge.

really.. it's a ton of fun, it eats people for breakfast! ;p

its almost too fun since i do have UA. i just gib people when i pop shield block and let revenges fly. i loved killing this one 49 rogue the other day (granted he wasnt very skilled) but i literally lost zero hp, saw him in stealth&knocked him out, shield block, revenge, revenge, revenge, dead. tickles me pink inside =P
