I've seen lots of scrubs arguing on the internet about [ITEM]Skeletal Club[/ITEM] and whether or not it's as good as [ITEM]Shadowfang[/ITEM]. I think they're suckered into such a silly comparison because of the similarities between the procs. Skeletal Club is clearly not a "poor man's Shadowfang" and neither is anything else in the bracket.
I suspect that the reason nobody ever discusses Skeletal Club in serious venues is a stigma associated with these "poor man's Shadowfang" discussions. Let's shatter that and try to get to the truth of the matter.` There's a whole slew of second-tier weapons we can and should measure The Club against. I'll be using [ITEM]Cruel Barb[/ITEM] and [ITEM]Butcher's Slicer[/ITEM].
Since the club's only special feature is a proc, it's clear that any discussion of its merits must center around the proc rate. Despite the obviousness of that conclusion,I have never seen a substantiated proc rate calculation; that is where we will begin.
I took my 19 rogue down to Theramore Isle and beat the crap out of the level 1 target dummies there. With nothing in her off-hand, I issued /combatlog and /startattack, then went back to surfing the web. About half an hour later, she had hit 1058 times and of those, 48 triggered the proc. 48/1058 is a 4.53% proc rate, which is 1.04PPM or about .5226 DPS when averaged out.
Now, let's look at the DPS of the club compared to the slicer and barb, including the DPS from AP bonuses on the swords. Assume we're a strength class; rogues would make the Slicer look even worse.
So, what does this mean? Looks like Skeletal Club is directly between the two swords in average DPS. The difference between constant DPS from AP on Barb and bursty DPS from Club is one the individual needs to evaluate for themselves. Do you love to play the Lottery? Choose Skeletal Club and put that luck to use increasing your DPS. Are you dual-wielding? Choose Cruel Barb hands down since the AP bonus will also affect your offhand.
There are many potential situations that might make one want to choose one or the other. Since the club never gets *any* love in twink weapon discussions, I think it's wonderful and amazing that it's even in the running.

- Skeletal Club: 15.6 + .5226 = 16.1226 DPS
- Cruel Barb: 15.5 + 12/14 = 16.3571 DPS
- Butcher's Slicer: 15.0 + (2*4)/14 = 15.5714 DPS
