There're also methods to dupe items. Some are involving Blizzard itself, some others can be done ingame without any help. But I'm pretty sure he had those in bank and mailed them.

Actually is a way to dupe now that you say it, but it is extremely hard. You do need help from 1 person + a 2 seater mount. But if done right, you get an infinite amount of whichever item you have. For example, you have a spectral tiger, you can learn it without using the item itself- profit.
