Pretty much no restrictions, it's full-fledged endgame MMORPG experience

As a returning player I was very confused about what exactly I could get by spending real $$ and how to get it. These two links helped me make sense of everything.
This knowledgebase article (https://support.trionworlds.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1597/kw/RIFT%20Account%20Types%20and%20Restrictions) lists in-game restrictions for different account types (guest, registered, registered w/ loyalty, and patron). You can get to 1500 loyalty by spending $5 on the lowest credit package in the Rift store.
This FAQ (RIFT® | Free-to-Play) 2] lists what exactly Patron status grants, what you get when buying the base game, and what you get for buying Storm Legion. Some further notes on that:
  • The base game can be had for $10 or less on various game key websites, or possibly less if you are lucky enough to find a box in-store since the original is so old now.
  • When buying Storm Legion, there are editions that include the base game as well. 'Combo Pack' and 'Infinity Edition' are the two types known to me that contain the base game.
  • Any edition you buy that includes extras in-game items still rewards those items. Includes Original game Digital Collector's Edition and Storm Legion: Infinity Edition, possibly others.
  • Storm Legion: Infinity Edition grants 60 days of Patron status according to my account page.
  • You don't want to buy a Storm Legion key unless it can be had for less than $18 or so, which is about how much the Storm Legion souls cost through the RIFT store by buying with credits. The new souls are the onlything buying a Storm Legion key grants you (unless of course you are buying the Infinity Edition or a combo pack w/ the original game).
Basically to sum it up, F2Ps are only really affected by the following restrictions
- 2500 platinum gold cap ("2500 gold" in WoW terms), which most probably won't hit
- can't list items on AH but can bid/buyout
- 2 character slots
- 3 bag slots

any thoughts on the potential of a no-restriction F2P rift in terms of pvp or even as a substitute for WoW?

Last time I tried to play Rift there was a bug with the camera where it would randomly just point at the sky if you were panning around. I tried to do all the tips and tricks to fix it that I could find online but nothing worked.

It's a shame it looks like an interesting game due to the amount of customization.

On the subject of Rift, ... no Mac platform means no play for me I'm afraid. Unless that's changed?

In my opinion, Rift at low level is a lot better than WoW. I don't know about end-game because I played it when the cap was level 20.

Along with quests, there's a lot of events in open world (like Invasions and Rifts). You're not forced to continuously "kill 6 of something" until you unlock dungeons. Even the dungeon's were challenging. In one of them, you had to try and move ghosts around a chamber to capture them. Even fishing was fun. In WoW, you've got everyone botting that because it's so damn tedious and annoying.

PvP wasn't perfect but a lot more balanced than WoW. Even Gy farming is impossible. Spawn points are on raised platforms or some unreachable spot. I could take on lvl 29's with my 20 (over there, the bracket was 10-19, 20-29, etc), while in WoW you get screwed over by OP 20's (don't even get me started on 24's).

It might not be as popular as WoW but it definitely seemed a lot better, in my opinion.
 
Probably wont run on my CPU.. WoW is like the only game i can play because Blizz is full of intelligent people who understand that not everyone have a 3000$ CPU!!! I mean really?? Is it THAT hard to make a low graphic option for a game?? I think the game devs are getting more and more retarded over time
 
to answer some questions

yes unfortunately rift is not on Mac yet (and might never be)

i dont know if Rift lets you lock exp so you can play lower level brackets, not sure if that's an option - but this F2P model will be fully endgame, and not pay-to-win at all

i will be checking it out.
 
No you cant lock your experience to tink. However I guess level 50 twinks are possible (max level for free to play)

Its a good game overall, but the PvP is not as good as in WoW

Well I havent played the game in a few months, but when I was playing it classes werent balanced at all and idk it feels like fights are a little bit messy.... Oh and also theres no wsg uh

Edit: Its still quite fun tho, but I got bored in a few weeks of playing

At the moment the servers aren't enough to handle the huge influx of F2P newcomers

basically there's a queue of 500+ for every server, my queue timer is estimated at 5.5 hours for me to get into game

So maybe only try loggin in during off-peak now until they fix it

But yeah I can't even get into game LOL every server is full

Wow thats nuts, i may try it out when they get their servers sorted, it does look interesting though. Is it your basic tank/dps/heal role or is it that gw2 bullshit where everyone scrambles around trying to dodge?

Thanks for pointing this out Purse, I hadn't seen anything suggesting it was or was moving towards F2P. I unfortunately subbed it back at release but had a very poor computer and just found the game meh, other than the talent trees. I will be trying it again soon.

Free options are free options.

It is WoW-style with holy trinity (tank/heal/dps) building. None of this dodge-roll business I know of.

So far it definitely feels closer to a WoW clone. Doesn't feel like GW2 at all.
 
My computer specs are pretty good, but i get an error every time i try to start the game. Always wanted to try it though.
 
It's kind of funny about them not having enough servers. They should have gone F2P a lot earlier, because in the EU at least the game was totally dead. There was literally only one server with anyone on it, and all the others were complete ghost towns. Game publishers wouldn't have these problems with huge changes in player numbers, like for releases or big expansions, if they used cloud servers instead of having their own hardware in a datacenter. Sure, the overheads might be a little bigger because you're renting, but when you can remotely activate and deactivate servers as you need them, you only ever pay for what the players use, and you don't end up losing customers and having to give them refunds, because they can't get into the game (Like with Sim City). It's literally 'push button - turn on server, push button - install disk image, push button - add it to your network' (I was using an Amazon AWS free server for a while to test my F2P twink wiki, and FireFall runs on their cloud too. I'm interested to see how the system handles that going into public beta soon).


As for Trion as developers, I'm kind of 'meh' about them. I would have ranked them higher than Blizzard up until bliz's recent removal of their heads from their asses, but they still didn't do a good job of class balancing (Marksman/Range rogues were just as bad as cata WoW hunters, mine could solo entire rifts easily by kiting with aoes), while they did seem to give a damn about low level balance (other than class), they grandfathered in exploits that had level 29s using level 60 enchants. I got the impression that while they listened to players more than bliz, they'd spend just as much of the time ignoring them. The size of the dev team has been reduced thanks to the huge loss of customers, so I wouldn't expect them to be doing much with the game, unless going F2P really makes a change to how profitable it is.


So what did I like about Rift?


  • The class diversity was way beyond what WoW offered. You only get 4 classes, but at level 60 you can put 76 talent points into any 3 out of 9 talent trees, which allow at least 2/3 from tank/healer/support for each class.
  • Rifts gave a nice bit of variety compared to WoW's questing, especially the full zone events, where lots of players would come into the zone.
  • They took tank/healer/dps a bit further by adding support. That's a buffing class that also does low levels of healing.
  • Bards - Other games have joked about adding them. Rift actually did it.
  • The macro system - While it doesn't do cast sequences, like you can in WoW, it does support fallthrough, so if an ability can't be used because it's on cooldown, or the target is out of range, the macro will move on to the next ability listed.
  • The addon API - So nice to see this get developer support right from it's beta. We got documentation from the developers, instead of having to learn how it worked through code scraping and trial and error. I enjoyed writing a cooldown/buff/debuff/proc indicator for Rift, far more than writing F2PAddon for WoW. If I do come back to Rift, it'll be to get this finished.
