US returning player needs help

i used to play the f2p bracket a lot around the end of wod and start of legion, whats going on in the meta now? i gather that grey ilvl items are useless again and theres a focus on stats like before legion, and i see a bunch of stuff where people are using lvl 300 engineering items and enchants etc.

is the engineering and enchanting possible for a vet/f2p account that doesn't have the enchants already? and if not can i even compete or am i just going to be cannon fodder

also what classes are currently good? like tier 1 or 2. i was thinking of playing my old ret pally, or maybe making a dps resto/ele shaman because i seen one perform very well in a bg recently

You can actually play without enchants. You will be at a disadvantage but the gap isn't anywhere as big as previously.
Tier 1 class (IMO)
Arms and fury warrior (burst and sustain)
Balance druid
Arcane mage
Bm and MM huntard
Outlaw rogue

ok well thats good to hear, and also is there any f2p professions i should be focusing on a new toon? not sure how all that has changed. from what i remember the only useful things were like leatherworking reinforcements and the swift/giant potion

Enchants really open the other classes up, but tier 1 is overrated anyway. You can play any class actually although specs like demo lock and ele would put you in for a doozy.

Conveniently, your idea for a resto shaman would work well. They're an exceptional heal/support class these days. And BGs can always use more healers.

ok ill pickup the resto shammy, what do you think a good min/max race would be for it? im thinking either goblin/panda (horde btw) with the panda being only if i can find food thats worth doubling the boost

You can. The melee range stun is pretty sweet too. Panda is a quality choice.

Im also fond of tauren stomp. Rogues and warriors are popular right now, and chances are youll find yourself being teamed up on by melee, so the AoE stun is nice. It'll also catch some scrubs off guard and theyll burn their kick on it.

Orc and Troll arent terrible choices but their racials dont offer much in the way of survivability and really thats what you're gonna need.

Goblin jump is insanely good to get out of sticky situations

This is my f2p char, I have ele force on wep which I found from way back, but besides that I geared this toon this xpac.

Engi goggles are better but im too lazy to farm my engi up

These are available to vet accounts. If you're subbed, you can level your professions to 300 and use the goggles, even if you then unsub.
