Ret or Prot pally?

protection has viable tools but does not match the damage of retribution to any extend.. so yeah, prot lives longer especially because they excell at denying casters the kill, as shield gives you time to free-cast a flash or two before you die.
IMO, retribution has tons to offer, perhaps practice abusing LoS and learning when to focus your HP on self-healing and when to prepare burst with it?

imo prot is so much more viable, the damage isn't as bursty, but you can bring so much more to a team.

3sec silence every 10seconds straight into a 5sec stun is perfect. Also, you don't have to choose whether you want to spend your holy points on damage or survivabilty, it's saved for those heals! :]
+ you get like an extra 500 hp.. more armour.. etc etc etc. As a prot paladin, the only classes i find hard are arcane mages because their blanket 3sec silence = nasty, and you can't outrange dat arcane barrage!

oh, and the prot talent reduces the cd on your HoJ by 10secs.. which is always helpful.

As a ret paladin, you are at a significant disadvantage in the midfield situations that have dominated this bracket's pvp lately (in US at least, can't speak for EU). AS makes prot paladins really annoying as a caster, but they do not have any significant damage output.

If you want to Ret, be like Dunceder ;) He loves that LoS but you'll see him focus firing in mid to straight own folks...

But Prot, I love Prot and wish there were more good Prot Paladins in 19's because they really do a lot of silencing. In all my healing days in 19's, the games with a good Prot Pally go way smoother as soon as he starts derping. DAT SILENCE. IDK about anyone else but when I get silenced and my heal target is getting rolled, its a GG. Anyone remember Handalf that F2P Prot??? He owned so hard lol just because of that silence and being able to heal pretty much indefinitely.

My vote is Prot, unless you want to be a glass canon then go Ret.

I love to play ret, just as some1 was saying: just learn when to use what, when to be offensive and when u need to run like hell. The ret burst is just insane, I'm just smiling everytime I crit for 1-1,6 k, wouldn't change that for anything. :D

go prot dps, people who say ret is better haven't seen me yet, but they wont ever see me again so do what the fuck u want

Prots are more safe than sorry, Rets do a lot of burst but are not that mobile.

looking ahead into mop both specs get better.

Ret gains more mobility through the lvl 15 talents making the only problem with ret (keeping on the target) a lot easier. Losing holy light and judgement of the bold hurts though.

I expect to see more people go prot for fcing as pally. With the 6% reduced chance to be crit with melee attacks, the +10% chance to block (depending on if you can block spells/ranged) and WOG not being on a global cooldown make prot seem very appealing. Not to mention the speed abilities for kiting.

as prot u can silence with avenger shield i think, right?
Yes. Right now it's a 15s cooldown and that's being changed to 9s in MoP, so that's a nice little incentive right there for when the expansion comes out.

If you roll with Prot, consider getting a healing set (Stam/Int) since the most you'll be good for is being a meatshield. But I'd say I prefer Ret.

prots were good in 19 when they had no CD WOG, and you were able to constantly WOG the 1 to 3 HPs as you built them up. there was alot of QQ on wow fourms having issues with 85 prot pals in PVP so within first 3 months of CATA blizz put a CD on WOG for prot/ret which was too high and later patched to 20 sec.

there was alot of QQ from those who had prot pals, blizzard responded basicly saying "we don't see protection as a PVP spec". in 19 bracket most prots switched to holy other brackets many went ret or holy

survival was greatly reduced in all brackets for prot and also affected ret specs even at 85 especially for ret still. blizz gave them sacred shield which was taken away at end of wotlk. this double bubble effect still really didn't help ret-pal's so no CD WOG is coming back for all specs in MOP

prot and ret will be really good come MOP again, with a choice of 3 speed talent options and no CD WOG. hunters sicking pets on one, will do them a favor and help them maintain HP's by having something to hit enabling WOGs while waiting for AS to CD to be used on hunter along with certain spec warlocks/mages...rinse and repeat
