EU+US Question regarding quest reward epics

Can rewards literally proc epic from like the first quest you do?

I'm trying to farm the crit gear in Westfall on my allied race mage and after like 20 new characters still had no epic of any kind, just lots of rares.

Is there like a minimum amount of quests you have to do b4 you get an epic or is it just all RNG?

Yes they can, its all RNG. Best of luck to you, I hope you get the epics you want so you can replace them with BG crate gear inside of a week.

I agree with the sentiment rerolling is a digsuting waste of your time but those crit pieces could possibly be bis for fire mage (excluding legs probs.)

Chance of an item upgrading

Rewards from most quests couldn't upgrade until about Patch 8.1.5. Due to how hard it was for Twinks to actually benefit from those upgrades and how relatively late those were implemented, we can watch the way how items from Battleground crates (added in Legion) upgrade and assume they behave in the same.

According to at least one post in the https://www.wowhead.com/item=135539/crate-of-battlefield-goods#comments:id=2875913's page, the chance of getting a Blue upgraded item in a Battleground crate is about 12,5% (1/8 or 1 in 8). Since, those items are of a Green quality and can't go to Purple,
we can establish that 12,5% is the chance of a single upgrade event occurring.

To extrapolate that information and calculate the chance of a Quest Reward going from Green to Purple, we multiply the chance of a Green to Blue upgrade (12,5%) by the supposed Blue to Purple chance (12,5%). The end result is about a 1,56% chance of a green quest reward turning into purple.

Of course this is all speculative, but at least it's a plausible parameter. Always keep in mind that (I) Blizzard may arbitrarily change any of those chances to create a better play experience; )II) or have a hidden luck protection system that slowly increases your odds at getting an upgrade or an item after you complete quests and loot bosses but don't get any of them.

Chance of getting an Item with specifict stats

There's 4 different stats that currently can be used in an item with randomized attributes: Critical Strike, Haste, Versatility and Mastery.

Not all items can roll all stats (ex. some can't have Mastery) or the same combinations of them (ex. some can't have a single stat, only a pair) and the amount of stats can vary slightly (ex. some have more haste than mastery or have equal amounts of both).

Also, items with a single stat are much rarer than items with two stats. While I can't remember where I read that (I believe the old Armory gave the roll chances),
items with two stats have twice the chance of dropping.

Currently, items from 20-29lvl Battleground Crates can drop from a total of 6 combinations (as they cannot have Mastery), of which 3 drop twice as commonly because they have two stats.

To calculate their individual chances of any possible item rolls, we do the following equation:

I. 100% = 3x (chance of rolls with a single stat) + 6x (chance of rolls with two stats)
II. 100% = 9x
III. x = ~11,11%
After that, we apply the value to the list of possible combinations for a complete result:

-- [22,22%] Crit. + Haste ("...of the Fireflash")
-- [22,22%] Crit + Versa ("...of the Quickblade")
-- [22,22%] Haste + Versa ("...of the Aurora")

- [11,11%] Crit. only ("...of the Decimator")
- [11,11%] Haste only ("...of the Impatient")
- [11,11%] Versa only ("...of the Adaptable")
Once again, if you want to find the chance of a single Battleground Crate dropping an item with a specific combination of stats, you multiply the chances of both events.

For Two Stats items: 22,22% x 12,5% = ~2,77%
For One Stat item: 11,11% x 12,5% = ~1,38%
Since this calculation shouldn't be affected by any sort of luck protection, it's much more likely to be true.

My theory* is that there is a 12,5% (1 in 8) chance of a single upgrade proc happening (Green to Blue; or Blue to Purple).

If you want a Green to Purple ("GtP") upgrade that should count as two interdependent events happening (Green to Blue, then Blue to Purple). We calculate that by multiplying their individual chances, so 12,5% x 12,5% --- which give us about 1,56% of getting a "GtP" upgrade.

Of course, Blizzard may arbitrarily have increased the chance of a "GtP" upgrade or have created a luck protection system that slowly increases your chance of getting upgrades after you complete quests and loot bosses but don't get items / upgrades. But that's all speculative.

*** Theory is based on experience and Wowhead comments on the drop and upgrade rate of Battleground crates. Since I made this post before, will not bother with linking them.

RNG. Have seen circumstantial evidence of toons gaming some sort of “luck/time” mechanic to up their chances of an upgrade after completing plenty of non-reward quests and waiting several weeks before completing the desired quest, but honestly it’s really not worth sweating over and your time can be much better spent elsewhere, especially with a new Xpac right around the corner.

Been here almost 3 months now and I’ve really come to appreciate how over-rated Epic quest upgrades are. Time is so much better spent cranking out BGs for hopes of blue pieces with the right stats before SL.

There are like 3 exceptions that might be worthwhile if you’re willing to commit to the grind:

- Soothsaying Vest/Harness for Mail/Leather DPS
- Fallen Apprentice’s Robe for Clothies
- Field Tested Spear for Feral/Survival

Everything else can be replaced by a blue BG item.

I can't believe Saxxon had one random on a whim theory patch day one over a year ago and you guys are still holding onto it...

- Fallen Apprentice’s Robe for Clothies
- Field Tested Spear for Feral/Survival
These are all objectively better than their BG counterparts and the only epics that are really worth rerolling for. Especially considering how short the quest requirement is. Though tbf, I tried rerolling for the spear and eventually gave up, and I do just fine with a BG blue.

SL NEW B I S

But what I’m saying is you can get more Crit from blue BG pieces.

If you wanted to max out Crit, blue BG pieces with “of the Decimator” suffix will be BiS.

Okay i get that but i've got 20days of sub, may as well try get some epics no?

Both the epic crit boots and legs are superior to deci pieces and the other piece is gloves.

Not superior enough to warrant hundreds of rerolls, but superior nonetheless.

unsanitary gloves and harvester boots iirc, also festering bracers

personally id go after the gloves, then just roll with whatever else procced, that chain is pretty easy
