Protection Warriors/Pallies; Best Sword & board combinations?

Stam

Grandfathered
As the thread title suggests I'm curious to see what combinations of main-hand and shield are used in both a scaled & non-scaled application for protection specs in the 39's bracket. I'm shortly going to be entering the bracket & have decided to roll a prot warrior. I've got some ideas as to what may be of use, but i'm hoping to get some advice from some of the more dedicated 39's. Last time I touched this bracket was probably nearly a decade ago...

I should note; I'm more interested in glass-cannon/high damage output, but really looking for a general opinion.

Thanks in advance :)

For some ideas. Prot warriors do solid damage, prot Pallies bring some utility but not much damage.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
I've checked the armory tab and haven't really come to a conclusion, especially when the players most-alike to the character I'm planning to build are using grandfathered weapons such as Vanquishers or the ZF mallet.

I'm going to go quite strength heavy; fortunately having acquired a Green Lens of Strength, Scarlet Chest/belt (for the Bonus Armor 2-set) etc. I suppose to be more specific, is something like Sword of Decay going to be viable (due to its high base damage) or is it simply too slow? I'll do some testing once I actually level the character but I'm just attempting to pre-plan by obtaining whatever I can prior to commencing.

Dazzling longsword's proc is utility on it's own, reducing armor and preventing the target from stealthing for a good amount of time. It doesn't have any stats though and the speed is quite high so if you wanted to go for max DPS you'd be better off with a weapon that has crit rather than the BoA sword with haste.

Here's a list of items with str / crit in the level range, most of this is scaling gear. Weapons - Items - World of Warcraft

I'd say Platinum Sword - Item - World of Warcraft is the most ideal since you could use it outside of BG's and not suffer too much with it only being a level 35 weapon, not sure about the scaling but I'm guessing at least +1 to str / crit. I'd also be interested to see what Cookie's Tenderizer - Item - World of Warcraft and Oggleflint's Inspirer - Item - World of Warcraft scale too, looks to me like these have the most potential.

There's also this http://www.twinkinfo.com/forums/f14/39-item-scaling-non-scaling-list-68511/ thread that lists some of the scaling of popular items at 39, doesn't contain much for weapons.

Gratz on the new gear by the way... bastard.

Shield of Maraudon - Item - World of Warcraft is about the best shield you can get(sadly I got the shield and vendored it before I deleted my prot war. When I restored it I couldn't restore the item T.T ). Platinum sword might be good, but I'm pretty sure regular heirloom will scale a bit better. a teensy bit of crit over haste probably isn't worth the weapon DPS.

Most of your damage will come from Deep Wounds, procced on everyone in your Tclap radius along with the snare(I suggest the glyph to make it 14y, it's deceptively big and will unstealth rogues etc while being resource free so you don't have to build rage to do it) and your biggest single target will be using Revenge. All 3 of these abilities (along with victory rush) use only your AP as the deciding factor -- however -- execute, devastate and to a lesser degree Heroic Strike(only 105%, a weak filler) do scale off weapon damage, making a Sword of Decay - Item - World of Warcraft attractive as a 1h. One of the benefits of prot is that you don't get rage-starved and will be ready to execute at nearly any time, and that weap could help guarantee that execute kills -- I've had a few people survive my executes with my prot build, as they're about 1300 noncrit.

My prot's build (in sig) is decidedly less "glass cannon" since my %-based self heals and dmg reduction all make stamina more effective(I run with about 9-10k in BGs), so I can stick around mid much safer(since I can't just roll away like a BM monk) but should give you a rough idea. Shield of mara from the mara quest is the shield you want though. Up to you on the weap (I'd get a sword of decay if one ever showed up on Sargeras)

Upside to prot>arms is increased survivability, ease/speed of applying your spread pressure, and no chance of rage starvation while you get to stay in defensive stance. Downside is that deep wounds is inferior to rending everyone by a decent margin and that you don't bring mortal strike debuff

Anyway, best of luck :)

P.S. I like the scarlet 2p, you're giving up 15 crit for 1AP and 5stam. Kind of a sidegrade to much cheaper alternatives, but it's classy.

Lesser protection is 2 BA. I don't know who in their right mind would trade 9stam for 2ap, even if you DO wanna hit "max" lol.

I didn't know about the Shield of Azsharan Conquest though, thanks for bringing that to my attention :D might be pretty great for a horde warrior.

Kaartish's Sword - Item - World of Warcraft

is a fun one . parry gives more revenge's and revenge is a large chunk of your damage

if you want utility go with dazzling longsword for te proc

Battered Viking Shield - Item - World of Warcraft

or

Commander's Crest - Item - World of Warcraft

for shield imo . crit may increase your damage a little but parry/ dodge gives survival and damage so imo its better.

Note: if somebody can tell me the str to parry , dodge rating to dodge percent, and parry rating to parry percent . I can tell you how crit stacks up to parry, dodge, and other stats.

Note 2: can tc proc dazzling longsword ?

Dodge and parry are way too situational to outright replace offensive stats, while it could be effective when tanking against 10+ mobs in PvE you're better off going for offense in PvP since there's no guarantee that you'll even be targeted by melee enough for parry to be effect. Crit's with a majority of your abilities = enrage and enrage = 10% damage buff for 8 seconds, not to mention crit = more damage on abilities.

On my prot PALLY, not warrior, @ 39 1 str = 0.0773% Parry.

GM verified today they won't do shit about restoring my shield of mara :( rip.

Did a little xp on skirm>afk testing though, Shield Against the Evil Presence - Item - World of Warcraft scales to 8str/8stam. Thorsen scales to 9str/3BA.

I'm not certain how much more SoD boosts devastate/execute, but you lose 5AP on your other skills for it. I have one now, and I'll probs test it this weekend(if I'm not forced by necessity into BMFC again)

Also pretty sure after limited testing that 1h fury even with SoD is worse than 2h, just because the lack of stats.

SoD added maybe 15 dmg or so to devastate, maybe a bit more to execute. Not worth dropping 20k+ for on a prot warrior haha.

80% sure 1h fury with double SoD is inferior to 2h as well, just because you're missing like 30crit/32stam/24str

Save the sword for rogues
