Is it completely inferior or is it just that subtlety is the most popular choice?

I haven't tried it personally, but was just thinking with Bangalash's claw and Balanced Heartseeker it seems like it could put out some pretty hefty damage.

Was just wondering if there's anyone out there that's played around with it to get some thoughts on the matter.

yeah i tried it out, pretty fun in 1v1 situation cos blackjack is just OP considering the amount of burst you can put out. However BG's were really hard for me to play with no ShS and 60% less chance to crit with ambush. I'd say try it out, it's a lot of fun but it is definitely inferior. I used the same weapons as you thought of.

Thinking of playing it for a while since with the MoP talent changes I think mutilate will be the new spec for 24 Rogue twinks

Seriously? I thought that with ShS removed sub would take a back seat, although I suppose now that sub gives hemo it counters the loss of mobility with added damage... although I did expect muti to be higher damage than sub, which is what lead me to the idea that it would be taking over as the leading spec.
