Modern XP-off Culture, Activism, Pride, and Accomplishment

"There are things known, and there are things unknown, in between are the doors of perception" - Aldous Huxley

The idea of new age twinking being wildly different from what it was before the XP lock is not one most readers are unaccustomed too. This new way of twinking, one defined by competition, and community it is inherent in our culture and the systems we participate in.

Understanding why the competition is apart of the natural state of twinking is not hard;

  1. We are all dressed in the same gear with the same enchants and only a few variations
  2. All our gear has the best possible stats for our level
  3. We only have few spells
  4. The damage and healing are high
  5. Positioning is the most important aspect of our meta by a significant margin as compared to casting using your ability appropriately (Mechanics) or making a good play (Intangibles).
  6. We have a level playing field

Understanding why community is apart of the natural state of twinking requires a different way of thinking;

  1. The Phenomena of mass migrations to servers is one that has occurred across all WoW playing styles, including Twinking - This has manifested itself on Bleeding Hollow and a few others to a lesser extent on US servers and Dreanor on EU servers.
  2. We are segregated by the PvP system from the normal stream of players
  3. You will see the same names over and over again throughout any form of built in PvP system that we have access too and throughout your time on any of these servers out in the open world or within a city.
  4. Our close-knit community discovers our meta

Community - Our community is one based largely on merit

  1. a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. (Twinkinfo, Bleeding Hollow)
  2. a group of people living together in one place, especially one practicing common ownership. (Twinkinfo forum users and social interaction systems in game)
  3. a particular area or place considered together with its inhabitants. (Twinkinfo and Bleeding Hollow)
  4. a body of nations or states unified by common interests. (The guilds, and Cliques that register and self-identify on this website or on Bleeding Hollow)
  5. the people of a district or country considered collectively, especially in the context of social values and responsibilities; society. (Our community is almost entirely run by itself decisions only by content creators/activists)

These concepts are the overarching principles that have lead to what The XP-off Community is in this day and age. I only include things relevant to active brackets.

Activism-

  1. the policy or action of using vigorous campaigning to bring about political or social change.

Things like the Twink Cup, GG19 and other community assets would fall under this definition. The Twinkcup has brought twinking into the spot light in a way few would have thought possible two years ago. with GG19 feeding heavily on it's momentum, and community leaders such as Pizza with his insane levels of advertising, or Hunnybuns19 and youbeezy with their podcasts (grats again on the big 100 boys), the streamers, the spectators, the thread makers, the tweeters, even the every day posters - all of them are activists weather they realize it or not.

Pride -

  1. a feeling or deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one's own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired.

Pride is a sensation that seems to be becoming more frequent within the XP-off Community for many reasons, People have pride in their community, and its achievements as well as their own. People have pride in their Twinks and their price tags, or Grandfathered items, people have pride in their Twinkinfo ranks, and in the respect the community gives them, from things like posts about Legendary Twinks, to polls about Top Twinks, people also have pride in their game play. The ways an individual can have pride in their twink and reputation is equivalent to the effort they put into their twinking experience.

Accomplishment -

We have achieved much and more in the past Two years, as a community we have done this. No single individual is responsible, Ideas and plans go no were without the support to keep them afloat. We all deserve perhaps a bit more than a simple pat on the back. I can't wait to see what our community comes out with next, and how it is received by the powers that be. We have a momentum going here, its up to us to keep it going.

Yall new twinks post some silly/dumb things. My lord and savior Deathstone is looking down right now loling and ashamed to what it has become. 19s are soft now. Real competition and rivalaries what made the bracket now it's this. Its like we tolerated mocha cause he was the special child we adopted. Now he has multiplied. Pointless threads as well.

And then you have GY farming and it doesn't even seem to bother anyone. Wooh. Very pride, much competitive.

Many of those same people are currently twinking on alliance to help faction imbalance.

GY farming by definition is preventing a game from ending to farm honorable kills, I havn't seen that in months, what I have seen is containment while flags are capped, if a person gets out and kills an FC before 3rd cap, whose fault is it?

I agree with you partially. The elitist culture back then certainly spurred a lot of activity and commitment and competition, but it also instigated a lot of hatred and...well... elitism. I think a good balance of that old gritty style of play and the new-age "Softness" as you put it, is most healthy for the bracket. Clearly you think the scale between the two is imbalanced in today's 19 community. Who knows maybe you're right. I for one like it better this way :D

We should throw a Twink pride parade

As a twink whose been doing it since the start I've seen every stage of twinking since it began on Argent Dawn back in 2004, the same server were NO MERCY and most of the gods of ruin and pre-wrath twinking dwelled. Ruin took over twinking during that time peroid because of the healthy premade culture that NM promoted, thats what caused the migration to Argent Dawn and Elune back in TBC and that's whats helped inspire me. Real competition is healthy competition. Rivalry and respect are not mutually exclusive and both tend to thrive when coupled together - as well as competition.

Nah, GY farming is sitting in the enemies GY just killing people because they can and don't feel like having a chance at an actual game.

By your definition and use of the word "just" a single flag cap nullifies the event from qualifying as a GY camp.

Not only that but fences now allow people to avoid getting camped entirely, of course you can still charge in without back up and get slaughtered, but that would be your own fault.

You misread my definition then. Lemme reword it for you.

Having a single team completely eclipse the other by being able to sit in the GY area, now to me that extends to the rejuvenation hut, and farm kills while having the choice to either a) cap the flag or b) not run flags and farm for 15 minutes. Capping a flag has absolutely nothing to do with GY farming.

But sure, the fences help with lessening the chance of being camped, but that doesn't stop it entirely.

I think our differences in definition are to fundamental to dispute however I think its unfair to expect a team to not use the best strategy available to them if they can, due to map layout in warsong the natural order of things while a team is getting beaten badly is to be pushed into the graveyard and then contained afterwords if possible

Sure if it's a wargame, go all out but we're just going to agree to disagree.
I'm all for the picnics n shit anyways.

Conq is saying containment is OK but GY farming isn't.

But in my books it's the same thing ;)

BTW, did you get the Fancy Feast from DMF? Makes for some fancy picnics :)

I had the same convo with Zeiren and I think they're the same thing. /shrug

BUT NO, I didn't. I'm going to need to find that.
