Meteor Slash: The Guide to Unholy Specced Death Knights at 70

I have a question, is frost or unholy better for 70 twink death knights who will be doing battlegrounds? And if frost is better, 1) Do we duel wield or use a 2her? and 2) why is this a guide on a spec that is worse than another for pvp? Why not do it as a guide for both maybe if there fairly even or something?

Come 4.0.6, Unholy will be receiving major nerfs to overall damage (e.g. Pet Damage and a 9% nerf on Scourge Strike via Rage of Rivendare) while 2h frost is going to receive a 12% weapon damage increase bonus, among other norable changes which can be viewed on the current PTR notes. So Frost I expect will be easily outdoing Unholy in the pvp and pve aspect for 70 twinking come that patch. Currently however, I would say it varies heavily playstyle to playstyle.

Frost has the advantage of heavy burst from Obliterate, Lichbourne (which allows you to spam death coils on yourself to heal up to 100%) and Hungering Cold which is an effective CC, albeit dispellable. As well, frost has Chillblains, which is an AoE Snare if you have HB Glyphed. Chains of Ice is now undispellable however. Frost also has the nice advantage of being able to mind freeze without Runic Power cost. Unholy has its perks as well: less mitigatable damage output from Death Coils, A Permanent Pet which if used effectively to keep it alive, can be quite deadly in micromanaging and damage overall based on its stuns. As well, Unholy has Anti Magic Zone for support and the damage output in general, based on my experience, is higher than that of frost, more consistantly. Unholy also has the perk of undispellable debuffs from Unholy Blight. Come the next pmajor patch however, I will most likely have a Two-handed frost main spec. Currently however, I perform much better as Unholy than as frost at the moment. Either way, I love playing either or but I am akin to Unholy, hell, I was even Unholy during the days of Blood Spec dps.

Assuming you like frost spec, to answer your first question, based on tests that I have done as Frost DPS in PvE, I am outperforming 2h frost through Dual Wielding with slow weapons. I do use Unholy Presence for Single handed frost dps while I swap to Frost Presence for AoE, much like Unholy. I expect this answer to change come 4.0.6 with an addition to Might of the Frozen Wastes giving a passive 12% damage increase (while on a side note, Unholy Strength is getting reduced from a 10% buff to strength to 5% - Eww, most likely because Unholy is topping charts at 85 currently), as well as continuing to grant extra runic power which it does currently.

To answer the second question, when I first wrote the guide, my first intentions were PvE at 70, as silly as that sounds. I keep true to my Epoch side. But I do believe the answer to the second question has a subjective hint. Not to brag or anything, but I have a very keen edge against Frost Knights as Unholy, and my audience was intended towards Unholy Death Knights, although I do love perks that Frost has to offer, I love my Unholy perks as well. Unholy used to be regarded as skill at one point in time I guess. But I do love the question :p. I agree with you though, I could of done a double guide, it may be a project in the works come 4.0.6 but I'll always have an Unholy spec to stomp around with - the playstyle isnt getting changed and Ill still be able to output a significant amount of damage but Obliterate Crits in my gear in PvE will be easily in the 11.4k Range.

God that was a long post, and if you read the whole thing, I'd be happy

So in terms of going frost come 4.0.6, should I go 2h frost or 1hers? and depending on that which weapons should i look at for BiS's?

From a weapon standpoint for 4.0.6. Are the pvp 2hers better to use? OR should I look at trying to get an Apolyon or something of the sort. I will be frost come 4.0.6, and pvping extensively over pve.

To answer both questions: I would pick up an Apolyon and a Brutal 2h for Frost play, with the Brutal wep with Swordbreaking and the Apolyon with Fallen Crusader, running with 3 20str gems come 4.0.6. Swap out to the Brutal 2h as neccessary when going up against a rogue for example. In short, Brutal 2h will give a very slight top end dmg boost over Apolyon, but its lacking in other stats. But anyways, yes I do expect 2hs to outperform 1hs with the new 12% dmg bonus with a 2h wep

Been awhile since I have updated, but it appears that by popular demand, I should probably get to work on a PVP Tips Thread. Wish granted, one day. I intend to focus on the utilization of certain abilities and tips on how to use them, based on my knowledge and judgment at 70 and 85.

I haz question. Should i use haste gems on pve frost?

Great guide although, i'll have to dispute about the pvp set.

Your including a GF trinket, which new DK's cant currently obtain, imo isn't the best slot for 70 pvp (DK)

You should be human for the extra dps trinket.

I'd pick Gnomish Lightning Generator over medallion of the alliance. (Since you can reforge this with 33 hit)

Also I'd pick Sonic Booster over Berserking trinket.

You have far too less resiliance, too much strength. Means your a very squishy DK for pvp. 400 - 500 Resiliance IMO is best.

I'd replace your meta gem with [32 stamina and reduce spell damage taken by 2%] for arena (currently since mages are so op)

And last of all, grab Sin'dorei Band of triumpth from SWP if you dont have the GF'd Vindicators Band of triumpth.

If you dont mind.. Heres my nearly fully PVP geared 70 DK twink, Just need Apolyon.

Hello Witty,

Yeah I have a lot of grandfathered gear so over the weekend, Ill get to switching up the PVP Set. Thank you again for the contribution. Personally, I would prefer a 25crit 1% spellreflect meta as opposed to the spell dmg reduce + stm meta. Chardev hasnt been working for me for the past few weeks (the bar loading up items to swap out will not display results) so Im going to get someone to do that for me :p
