8/10 Mages are viable. 8/10 Warlocks aren't viable. The players, not the class. If you know what you're doing, you'll do fine.
Warlock isn't played as pure DPS, it's played as support classes. Warlocks have excellent single target CC, great for returning flags with other players or supporting choke points where it takes one dps to kill your healer and make you lose control of the field. They also have modest aoe damage, one of the only classes in this bracket with this trait.
Frost Mages have great crowd control and escape measures for peeling or getting a flag to the base (shouldn't be used as a main flag carrier) and shutting down escort groups to set up a recap. Arcane mages can also be great single target DPS and Utility for shutting down healers.
It all depends on your play style, and the player in general. Both classes fair well in this bracket, Mage is the easier class to play correctly.
Edit:
Warlocks also get a bitchin' scythe.
