I'd recommend Where the Red Fern Grows, I Am Legend, and Plague Year. They're books anyone can relate to.

Unbearable Lightness of Being is deep and more about the readers perception as far as the entertainment/pleasure you'll draw from it. It's an absolute must for book nuts like myself. I just wouldn't recommend it to people I know nothing about.
