Picking up a cheap graphics tablet should help It's how I did my avatar, I traced a picture of myself using a tablet ^^

Just takes time really. Sooner or later you'll accidentally do it and you'll remember how you did it, and then from then on, you know how to do it ! That's how I work on Photoshop atleast
