Freeadin

Legend
Hello everyone, my name is Freeadin. I've been following the forums for a while now but have only just decided to create an account here. I play on Vashj alliance (though there may be a horde toon in the near future) and am always looking to improve my playstyle, so a quick critique of my toon would be much appreciated. If I could be more specific, I would ask for weapon preferences on a protection paladin. Right now, it's between the Devout Aurastone Hammer and the Bloodsoaked Skullforge Reaver. I appreciate your time and hope to battle alongside of, or aginst you, soon.

As a protadin you would want strength and stam. Don't take Int gear unless they have good stam. Avencgers shield scales with attack power, which is obtained through strength. But the aurstone mace is better than skullforge reaver because the spell power is useful.

Take the sword if you plan to stay Prot... check the MoP change Guarded by the Light (Passive)

The change makes the only source of SP for protadins 50% of their AP.

Hey Freeadin!

I see you all the time in the gulch, you may have seen me as Cheesebro/Cheesestring/Cheesepriest, and I believed I have done arena with you a couple weeks ago (that could have been another pally from Vash'j through). For Prot I would for sure recommend the valor BOA's, as crit is a lot more handy in this bracket then dodge, especially with the ridiculous amount of hunters(until MOP at least).

Intellect gear is also important because of the amount of off healing you do as a prot (or should be doing), as it is a support class.

The burnished chest/pauldrons are bis for prot. They offer more stam and defensive stats, Valour for retribution. You shouldn't have more than two gears with int. As I said, strength and stam are for protadins.

I understand where you're coming from, but burnished only has slightly more stam, while having slightly less strength. The real difference is the dodge/parry compared to the crit from valour. Dodge/parry rating will give you very minimal survivability in this bracket, as I hope you've noticed already you cannot dodge/parry hunter shots or spells, and you cannot dodge when you're facing away from somebody (should not be a problem if you're not keyturning, but w/e). The crit on the other hand helps almost everything you do as a paladin, both healing and damage. If you are going for max survival, the PvP Plate shoulders are a much better bet, as resil reduces damage from all player sources.

intellect is also an very important stat as a protadin, as their weapon damage is pathetic and exo spamming gives a much greater DPS output. Also, intellect increases mana pool, which means you heal more, throw more shields, exo spam, whatever you like, while also increasing the effectiveness of some of these spells.

Playing every pally spec in this bracket, along with having 3 separate pallys (Cheeseheals, Cheesebro and Hurpdurpp)

Strength increases the damage of avengers shield and melee/crusader strike. With scales and afew crit items I can often crit 220 crusader strike. Strength isn't a useless stat. A paladin with intellect is called a holy paladin. Intellect is not something to STACK as protection. Your melee will hit like a wet willy. Most int gear in this bracket are non mail, therefor you lose alot of armor. Ret is supposed to use more strength than stam, prot is supposed to use more stam than strength and holy is supposed to use more int than stam.

Ret actually uses crit more than strength, and people put int on prot for more mana meaning more healing, meaning more survivability. Prot has amazing utility, if you want to do damage then just go ret. Your whole concept is wrong, and you should fix that.

You guys are great! I feel so welcome here already!
Cheesestring, I do recognise your name, it's very original and something i haven't forgotten! Best of luck to you when I see you in one of our premades! (I LOVE premading...)
Jsu8, I looked at your protadin and I've gotta say it looks pretty good! You already have AGM, which is something I've decided not to get due to recent Vashj level 85 activity *frowny face*. Not to condescend, but if you don't want to farm for the foreman's leggings, you could get the mighty chain pants from the blacksmith in Ashenvale as a solid placeholder. Oh! and I recognised his name too! Is it inspired from DragonQuest?
Last but not least, R Prime, I looked up the MoP changes just the other night and I noticed the same thing! Naturally, I'm starting to consider the sword again.
If anyone could show anyone else they know this thread and ask them about their preferences on the weapon and if worrying about MoP is a big deal yet, I would really appreciate it! I've appreciated everything thus far! Thanks again!

If you're going to play until MoP comes out (long time off), then you're going to get both eventually. But get the mace first, the spell power is just so much better.
