You are baptized when you are an infant in the Catholic faith.
All of my children as well as myself and my siblings were baptized. We(they) have god-parents that treat us(them) as if we(them) were their own family. My wife and I have god-children of our own.
If you do decide to get your child baptized when you pick your child's godparent(s) I would highly recommend a relative as the person should be individuals who are ready to accept the responsibility of being a part of a godchild's life for the rest of his/her life.
