hybrid paladin

watched this movie Zentille - Twink 39 PVP (Hybrid) By kigiri a long time ago but rediscovered it today. It features some kind of hybrid paladin. He plays mostly with shield and 1hand and tanks and heals quite alot but also seems to be able to dps rather good, mainly with seal of command and consecration. His armory profile is gone now but I have seen it before and remember that he was geared for sp and stamina and was specced about 50/50 holy-retri.

This video was produced for a quite long time ago but I like his playstyle and specc and wondered if anyone else have tested out something like this and if it would be viable nowadays?
 
i've seen a few 29 and 39 paladins that spec mainly into ret, they get a 2h, and mainly just get lots of stats such as stamina, strength, and spell power. it works pretty well.



i would suspect that a slow 2h would work best for this sort of build, but for defensive and healing purposes i can see a sword and board working...but not for dealing damage.
 
yea obviously there would be less dmg with such specc and without 2h. but doesnt seal of command benefit a little from spellpower? With that + consecration one could be able to do decent dmg and gaining a lot more survivability and healing than ret. It seems to work quite good in the movie, but im no twinking-expert, maybe its mostly non-twinks that he kills in it.

i'm not sure what it's based off of, but i'm pretty sure that if you have a slower weapon it's better.



haven't played a ret in awhile but back in the day if you had seal of righteousness, it was better than SoC unless you had a pretty slow 2h.



if they changed it then idk.
 
I was actually re-speccing my pally prot DPS with a few SP peices, such as the Underworld Band and 40 SP to my MFZ. Haven't tested this out yet, but I will be sure to let you know as soon as I do.
 
Since consecrate benefits from both AP and SP nowadays I don't see why a ret/holy build with sword and board wouldn't be a viable spec. It's an interesting concept to say the least, and I think you'd be more heavily reliant on consecration and judgement damage, rather than weapon and SoC damage. You'd gain a lot more survivability vs. melee classes with the sword and board and the points in holy for self heals. You may even have more survivability against hunters, unfortunately I would see this spec lacking the burst to take down most hunters and probably most casters in this bracket. I suppose if you want to be a melee killing fiend and don't want to roll prot this spec could be an intriguing alternative. Prot wrecks melee though, at least at 70 it did. I used to love fighting multiple rogues on my pally and laugh as they'd kill themselves on my holy shield and ret aura.
 
I tried out the idea in a sandbox and the result was this chardev.org v6 ~ a World of Warcraft character planner

a crit-paladin. Since crit and hit benefits both melee and spells now, crit and hit are the best stats for a hybrid paladin. With this build you crit insanely much, and you're hitcapped.

I only see 1 problem with that, you can't put surefooted on those boots. Other than that it looks pretty interesting, I might have run it with 40 SP to weapon though.
 
You're right, I made a mistake chosing 20 str over 40 spp. And at first I had other boots, which could take Surefooted, so I made a mistake there too :p Guess I'll change it back now.

Lol looks good, I'd still be interested in how well it would work vs casters/hunters though.

That seems really nice, however what I was thinking was sp gear instead of ap.

a loss of dmg but with a gain of better healing, and maybe enough dmg left to make it interesting.

maybe its stupid, could be me being anti-ret trying desperately to find another way to dps but I think it seems fun, especially if it would be possible to get that high crit even with sp gear.

i Xfert on Illidan, my name was taken so i had to rename to Zentìlle you can check out my (EU) armory there : [char=eu-Illidan]Zentìlle[/char]

I still use an hybrid spec, but i loose the imp Hand of Freedom wich was the main reason of my hybrid spec.

I was using à realy hybrid stuff pre 3.1

  • 550 AP (with savagerie on my 2h)
  • 220 SP (With SP shield and +43 sp on the mona mace)
  • 28% crit melee (with 450 skinning, up to 31% after each judgement)
  • 25.5% crit spell (30.5 % on my flash heal with the glyphe)

But i was lacking Stam/intel so i go with 2350HP / 2000MP

Use a lot of mana pot in wsg and got a good regen stuff to switch when i was out off fight (174 MP5 out of combat with wisdom)

arround 2k8 armor (on retrib aura)





But when the patch is comming live,​

i've lost a lot of Spell power / stam and regen and without my anti stunt HoF, take on rogues was harder.

So i build a full Holy stuff with no crit and no AP a lot off intel / stam to survive.

I guess i'm more heal than DPS, but i still can choose betwen DPS stuff or Holy stuff.



On my actual stuff i go for 200 SP / 20 % spell crit / 3000 HP / 2600 MP(more than that is pretty useless imao)

I use Eye for an Eye+imp ret aura, so i got an insane passive dps.



My Advise :

  • You should go for at least 160 spell power,

    even full crit stuff like the one that tidal make isn't good for heal without spell power. Notice that your ret aura take benefice only of your spell power. I can't survive if my flash heal don't exceed 430. (i'm runing oom too fast, and have to cast much more, wich mean more risk to be silence, less dodge / parry, less auto attack, then less dps or regen ect...)



Conclusion :​

I still enjoy playing hybrid spec but i go more for a classic holy stuff, i'm mainly a healer but got that great passiv dps so i can tank and kill 4-5 untwink, or take rogues 1vs1.

I'm a still a (noob)retpal... but i love to think i got an improved gameplay :p Full ret is soooo booorring to play and overpower.

I totally agree that ret is boring, maybe cause they are OP and kinda ezmode or maybe cause I just dont like the playstyle.

Too bad that the patch ruined your way of playing, it looked very fun and could be a decent dps-alternative to ret. Hope the patches in the future open up for more interesting hybrid speccs to paladins.
 
WTB Shockadin viability at higher lvls again. :( I read a comment somewhere suggesting that they make exo unlockable vs people in pvp deep in the holy tree, like 40+ points required. I think that would be reasonable as I watched some vids of shockadins using exo before it got nerfed and it wasn't overpowered by any means. But, that's a different story than twink brackets. I would personally like to see another viable means of paladin dps other than ret myself. I tried doing it at 49 as holy and I could out damage as well as outheal everyone in the same bg but I was dying quite a bit trying to dps rather than healing. Holy has a fairly high amount of burst with Divine favor and holy shock, but you lack that at lvl 39. Most lvl 60 shockadin specs were ret/holy, but it's difficult to be able to get enough points to make it viable at lower levels.

Shockadin is the most awesome specc and playstyle wow has ever offered imo, played it on my paladin for as long it was viable, sadly I started kinda late so I didnt have much time to play it.

One of the reasons I never bought wlk was that it killed shockadins :mad:

As you said shockadin is impossible at 39 cause of the lack of holy shock, however it would still be more fun than ret.
