He's a red hydra on a ~23 hour spawn timer I believe.
You can also get the Kurken, but he's not rare, though he probably has the most graphical effects out of all the other pets. If you have access to a level 100 hunter, you can try to tame the mechanowolf from Gnomer.

An important thing to note about any mech pet, is that you need the Mecha-Bond Imprint Matrix to tame them, unless you are Goblin or Gnome. This is likely unobtainable by F2Ps (maybe someone will find a way).

If you want a fancy Carrion Bird, try http://www.wowhead.com/npc=50803/bonechewer. It's the closest you can come to having a Spirit Beast at this level, apart from http://www.wowhead.com/npc=3619/ghost-saber. But Carrion Bird's have the healing de-buff so that would be more useful.
Ahh, I miss my Spirit Beasts. Used to have all the Spirit Beasts on my main BM Huntard up until Legion hit. But, hey now I can pull out ol' Bonechewer and pretend he's healing me and stuff..........Man I wish they'd bring out a 20 Spirit Beast.......

Most useful : any pets with hysteria, slow, healing debuff.

Water Strider(Panda only), it allows you to walk over water, it's the most amazing feature of a pet, very nice for Arathi Basin XD

no. but with possible zone scaling coming somewhere in future there would be a lot more options.

No, you can't, but some mobs, like N.U.T.Z scales to your level (minimum level 12 though).

You need http://www.wowhead.com/item=134125/mecha-bond-imprint-matrix to tame Mech pets though. However seeing that some of the new Legion pets can scale, it would be great to see pets in the future scale also.

Loque used to be my main's pet of choice for some years till I went Vet. I used to love his roar, it was different to all the other Spirit Beasts. Used to drive my arena partners mad but I could listen to his roar all day

If only I could hear that sweet sound again........
