How does twinking work?

I'm sorry if this isn't the right place for this but i'm returning to retail and classic recently and i have about a dozen old twinks but iv been told they cant que anymore or something. Is it only f2p?

Retail is currently only F2P and Vet besides for the anniversary event Korrak's Revenge that you can queue on any of your old twinks. Outside of that event there are not enough non-F2P/Vet players queuing for games to pop.

For classic BGs open on the 10th and is expected games will pop in most if not all brackets

basic legion account 110’s and ftp/vet 20’s play in the experience on brackets at those levels. for now everyone, xp on and off, play in the same games in korraks revenge with the rest of the wow population.
