  • I love underdogs, main is a Horde EN Sham. I haven't seen an Arcane Mage pre-MoP.

Anyone have any first hand experience since the XPac hit? I just want replies other than "FRAWZTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!".

It's good. Get 4 stacks and someone to 1k hp, shatter them and they're dead.

Arcane is superior mage spec atm.

Something's wrong with hit rating? I'm capped and I hit just fine on my rogue.

I play arcane just now, admittedly getting used to it! Much better "finishing" capacity than frost with huge crits but missing the CC.
I prefer arcane right now purely because my score becomes less scrublike! :)

Quote me if I'm wrong, but since 5.2 we need as much hit as a 24, don't we?
This, and it's specifically Spell Hit that is a problem, so a mage would feel it a tad more than a rogue. ^^

Mages - locks - and warriors will always get outclassed proby. even prot warriors are out classed by good rogues and hunters

Well if we all played Paladins Druids and Rogues the bracket would- ....Oh wait, the brackets already like that. TEAM FOTM GO!

Don't see why warrior was even brought up.

Prot Warrior is a 1 trick pony, anyone who thinks the Protection Warrior is great right now is delusional and is only "skilled" every 6 seconds. I outplayed tons of Prot Warriors all week on my Arms warrior as far as kill secures and flag returns go. Arms is not only more viable but can compete damage wise, making Prot the lamest FOTM I've seen in half a decade.

LAWL SHIELD DERP DOES HIGH DAMAGE. Tons of games with all the tanks farming mid. It's a joke and a bad one.

I believe that the bigger problem isn't just spell hit, but CC, which for some reason seems to require more hit rating than a normal spell. Thus, you can be hit capped and do pretty well with your offensive spells in terms of hitting, but your CC (such as poly) will still be unreliably. It was mentioned in one of Deadvulcano's threads, but I can't seem to find it atm.

Edit: Here it is. The problem seems to be with non-spec specific spells.

Even with good gear, 4-stack ABarrage crits for 700-750 hp inside battlegrounds. That's nothing to write home about - other classes can do more damage without / less build-up time.

Additionally, mages have low armor and no self-healing or defensive abilities except blinking / blazing away. Prepare to die a lot, unless you have a pocket healer.

tl;dr: arance mage sucks as a pugger

I played a PuG today on my arcane mage, like the most terribly geared thing in the whole world, proffs not completed, terrible. I'm talking basically a level 20 in a couple 'looms and like... Four? Slots BiS.

Came third on the HKs and 3rd-4th on the overall damage thingies.

You just blink about and mash keys. It's one of the easiest classes to PuG about and kill people with.

Frost does better damage than arcane this patch.
Frost does better damage running under the assumption that you aren't going to be trained or your target wont bother to LoS you. In most settings, arcane is superior. Easier to sustain damage, and much higher burst.

I finished my Mages Pre-BiS last night and ran some games.

I found myself getting trained a lot.
Arcane Charge setup is very effective but feels very clumsy, you can work to get it set up and then lose it at a moments notice.
I find myself strafing and instant casting more than anything since almost every class this expansion has ridiculous mobility.

All and All it's alright. Some improvement needed on my end, I usually end up in the top 6.

You can get your share of killing blows, especially if you are on the winning side. But a lot of those kills will be "frag stealing" and you won't be the BG hero who changes the outcome of a game or scores 20-0.

Maybe "arcane mage sucks" was too harsh a verdict. Still, playing one feels unrewarding compared to other classes. Damage as well as survivability is mediocre.

I understand you want other players to roll something different from FOTM classes. But I don't think raising unrealistic expectations is the way to do it.
