Legend
  • Welcome! A fast and simple guide to gearing your Holy Paladin.

    Legend:
BiS = Best in Slot available.
F2P = Free to Play (Meaning a trial account character).
    (A) = Available to Alliance only.
    (H) = Available to Horde only.
Placeholder = An item that is recommended to be used as long as you have not obtained a better or BiS version of that slot.
Grandfathered = An item that is not obtainable anymore.

    Head
    Lucky Fishing Hat (BiS)
    (A) Keeshan's Bandana (Optional)
    Rifle Commander's Eyepatch (Optional)
    Flying Tiger Goggles (Placeholder)

These are the only Head Slot items available that provide any beneficial statistics to an F2P Holy Paladin. The Lucky Fishing Hat is considered to be the best item available in Head Slot for its massive Stamina gain and therefor extra survivabillity. However, some Paladins may prefer Keeshan's Bandana over Lucky Fishing Hat because of the 27% fire damage reduction it provides. The bracket is crowded with Hunters and their damage mainly comes from Explosive Shot, which is a fire damage abillity. It is strongly recommended to NOT choose Rifle Commander's Eyepatch as your quest reward from Quest - The Gnoll King as it will cost you one of the other available rewards that is considered to be the BiS shield for Holy Paladins, (A) Shield of the Stockades. However, it might be a very useful Head Slot item if you ever want to try the Retribution spec.

    Neck
Brilliant Necklace or Thick Bronze Necklace (BiS)
    (A) Sentinel's Medallion (Optional, Placeholder)
    (H) Scout's Medallion (Optional, Placeholder)
    Ornate Tigerseye Necklace (Optional)

These are the only Neck Slot items available that provide any beneficial statistics to an F2P Holy Paladin. Most people go with Brilliant Necklace for the combination of stamina, intellect and spirit that go along with the small bonus amount of agility and strength. If you prefer some extra survivabillity over these spread statistics you might want to roll with Thick Bronze Necklace instead. Both these necklaces require you to level the Jewelcrafting profession though.

    Shoulder
    Pristine Lightforge Spaulders (BiS)
Aged Pauldrons of The Five Thunders (Optional)
    Mystical Pauldrons of Elements (Optional)
    Magician's Mantle (Optional)
    Cleansed Pauldrons (Optional, Placeholder)

Pristine Lightforge Spaulders are the best choice to roll with in this bracket. The little bit of Resillience helps you to survive against any bursty classes and 24s. Your secondary option is Mystical Pauldrons of Elements, which is an excellent choice if you want to go for a pure healing and assisting role. You will be more vulnerable wearing this over Pristine Lightforge Spaulders because of the armor and resillience loss, but your healing output will be slightly increased. You can exchange Honor Points for Justice Points to eventually buy this. Untill you obtain one of these, you could go with Cleansed Pauldrons. However, this will go at the cost of one of the other available rewards from Quest - Cleansing the Caverns, Serpentis' Gloves, which is an optional choice for your hands slot. It is strongly recommended to not choose Cleansed Pauldrons over Serpentis' Gloves. Instead, make sure you farm your Honor Points fast.

Edit: Need to figure out Armor ratio at this level as Aged Pauldrons of The Five Thunders may be the best choice for survivabillity. The 1 extra resillience gives an additional 0,55% damage reduction and the Pauldrons also provide 1 extra Stamina and Intellect over Pristine Lightforge Spaulders at the cost of 71 Armor and 4 Critical Strike Rating.

    Back
Tumultuous Cloak of the Sorcerer (BiS)
Tumultuous Cloak of the Elder (Optional)
    Tumultuous Cloak of Stamina (Optional)
    Inferno Cloak (Optional)
    Sporid Cape (Optional)
    (A) Stitches' Stitchings (Optional)
    Firebane Cloak (Optional)

The Tumultuous Cloak is by far the best choice. Most paladins would choose the Cloak of the Sorcerer because they cast a lot and therefor Haste comes in handy. However, some people might sometimes be tempted to roll with Firebane Cloak or Inferno Cloak instead. This is because the F2P bracket contains a lot of Hunters at the moment, and the massive damage output from Hunters usually comes from Explosive Shot, a bursty ranged attack that deals fire damage. Fire resistance hugely reduces fire damage taken and therefor helps you survive those Hunters more often.

    Chest
    Mystical Vest of Elements (BiS)
Breastplate of the Terrible Price (Optional, Placeholder)
    Burnished Breastplate of Might (Optional)
    Tree Bark Jacket (Optional)
    Toughened Leather Armor (Optional)
    Inferno Robe (Grandfathered, Optional)

Mystical Vest of Elements is by far the best choice. The Burnished Breastplate of Might can be used for extra survivabillity as it adds 95 Armor, 7 Dodge Rating and 7 Strength over Mystical Vest of Elements at the cost of 7 Intellect and 7 Critical Strike Rating.

    Shirt
    Unimportant.

    Tabard
If your trial character is still in a guild, wear a guild tabard for awesomeness, like I do.

    Wrist
    Spiked Chain Wristbands (BiS)
    (A) Sparkmetal Bracers (Optional, Placeholder)
    (H) Bracers of the Most Trusted (Optional, Placeholder)
    (H) Uninsured Bracers (Optional, Placeholder)
    (H) Acquisition Bracers (Optional)
    Drakewing Bands (Optional)
    Mindthrust Bracers (Optional)
    Crystalline Cuffs (Optional, Placeholder)

This is where it gets pretty interesting. A lot of people look right past the Spiked Chain Wristbands, even though they are by far the best obtainable bracers for an F2P Holy Paladin. Spiked Chain Wristbands can be considered an ultra-rare though. You have to get lucky to get them drop off a random mob, and even then you need them to be <Of the Eagle> and want them to be <4/4>. This item is extremely, almost impossibly, hard to obtain. Even though I would personally take any mail item over a cloth item in order to enstrengthen my defenses against melee classes, a lot of people accept to go along with the Crystalline Cuffs. I personally recommend to use (A) Sparkmetal Bracers and (H) Uninsured Bracers as placeholders.

    Hands
    Fortified Gauntlets (BiS)
    (H) Gloves of the Hero (Optional, Placeholder)
    Serpentis' Gloves (Optional, Placeholder)
    Woodworking Gloves (Grandfathered)
    Serpent Gloves (Optional)
    Jutebraid Gloves (Grandfathered)

Fortified Gauntlets is the best available pair of gloves for F2P Holy Paladins. It is however, considered an ultra-rare just like Spiked Chain Wristbands. It has to drop off a random mob, and even if it does it still has to be <of the Eagle> and you will want it to be <6/6>. This item is extremely, if not impossibly, hard to obtain. Gloves of the Hero are an excellent secondary choice but is only obtainable by Horde players. They will miss out on some Armor and 2 Intellect but the +4 Critical Strike Rating will make up for this. For Alliance, Serpentis' Gloves is a good choice to roll with untill you obtain the Fortified Gauntlets. Some people even say Serpentis' Gloves are better than Fortified Gauntlets. However, in my personal opinion, I would prefer the extra Armor and 1 Intellect over 4 spirit.

    Waist
    Earthbound Girdle (BiS)
    Moss Cinch (Optional)
    Girdle of Nobility (Optional)
    Ghamoo-Ra's Bind (Optional)
    Belt of the Hero (Optional)
    (H) Searing Belt (Optional)

The Earthbound Girdle of the Sorcerer is the only real viable item for F2P Holy Paladins. You could roll with an Earthbound Girdle of Stamina though, to gain more survivabillity. Some other cloth options provide some extra Intellect, but in my opinion its not worth the loss of Mail Armor and the Haste Rating.

    Legs
    (A) Thaelrid's Greaves (BiS)
    (H) Scales of Aku'mai (BiS)
    Silk Threaded Trousers (Optional)

Unless your after a full intellect set, go for Thaelrid's Greaves or Scales of Aku'mai, depending on your faction.

    Feet
    Corpse Rompers (BiS)
    Fortified Boots (Optional)

Unfortunately, there aren't many good alternatives for an F2P Holy Paladin. Both Corpse Rompers
and Fortified Boots aren't a bad choice. Most people would roll with Corpse Rompers, because of the immediate extra stamina gain at the cost of a long term bit of extra damage reduction, some Armor.

    Rings (2 Slots)
    Seal of Argas (BiS)
    (H) Garrosh's Pardon (BiS)
    Gloaming Band (BiS)
    Deep Fathom Ring (Optional)
    Lavishly Jeweled Ring (Optional)
    Hogger's Shiny (Optional)
    Ring of the Shadow (Optional)
    Black Widow Band (Optional)
    Stillwater's Signet (Optional)

    Trinkets (2 Slots)
    Arena Grand Master (BiS)
    Rune of Duty (Optional, Placeholder)
    (A) Inherited Insignia of the Alliance (BiS)
    (H) Inherited Insignia of the Horde (BiS)
    Swift Hand of Justice (Optional)
Discerning Eye of the Beast (Optional)

If you are anything but Human, take an Inherited Insignia of the Alliance or Inherited Insignia of the Horde along with one Arena Grand Master. A trinket will save your or someone else's life. Paladins are one of the easiest classes to be crowd controlled, and definitely need a trinket for situations. If you are Human, take 2x Arena Grand Master. If you want to go for a pure healing gearset, you could roll with Swift Hand of Justice to increase the casting speed of your Flash of Light or you could go with Discerning Eye of the Beast for the Intellect and therefor spellpower benefit.

    Weapon
    Devout Aurastone Hammer (BiS)
    Battleworn Trash Blade (Optional)
The Blessed Hammer of Grace (Optional)
    (H) Mace of the Sunwalker (Placeholder)
    (A) Mace of the Order (Placeholder)

Since Paladin's can't wear staves, 2h's are out of the question. This obviously means we have to roll with a 1h, which will be a Mace since that's whats supposed to be for healers. Both Devout Aurastone Hammer and The Blessed Hammer of Grace are an excellent choice. The The Blessed Hammer of Grace slightly increases survivabillity with 3 extra Resillience and 2 Spirit at the cost of 4 Intellect and 1 Critical Strike Rating from Devout Aurastone Hammer.

    Off-hand
    (A) Shield of the Stockades (BiS)
    (H) Shield of the Barrens (BiS)
    Seedcloud Buckler (Optional)
    (H) Shield of Talrendis Point (Optional)

For Alliance the choice is pretty obvious, get (A) Shield of the Stockades as it is providing the most beneficial stats for any healer in the F2P bracket, also the most Armor. If you missed out on this shield because you chose a different reward for Quest - The Gnoll King, you can always still get Seedcloud Buckler, which definitely isn't a bad choice either. The Horde need to decide just what they prefer, 1 Stamina and 1 Intellect over 3 Critical Strike Rating, or maybe even 1 Intellect and 3 Spirit over some Stamina.

    Relic
    None available at this level.

Thanks for reading everyone, I hope I was able to help you out in making your decision concerning gear choices for an F2P Holy Paladin. I gladly receive all feedback to improve the quality of this guide, so feel free to respond with opinions, suggestions, calculations and any other useful information you may have!

Hmm, interesting. I don't think Keeshan's Bandana - Item - World of Warcraft would be considered Bis by any means. While the extra resistance is nice, it really doesn't do as much as an extra 4 stam + 4 hit. It can be considered a place holder but I personally think any holy pally who doesn't have a fishing hat should have Flying Tiger Goggles - Item - World of Warcraft as a Bis placeholder.

You should also list Mystical Pauldrons of Elements - Item - World of Warcraft as Bis shoulders next to Pristine Lightforge Spaulders - Item - World of Warcraft because they are both BiS but it's actually just a matter of personal preference.Cleansed Pauldrons - Item - World of Warcraft should be listed as a placeholder until the respective player has enough Honor/JP to purchase the BOA shoulders.

inferno and Firebane cloak need to be taken out completely. While the resist may look nice, you can actually be stacking way better stats than fire resist. Any of the other options you listed regarding cloaks seem fine to me.

Thanks, Thanks, was already looking for that other Shoulder BoA but couldn't come up with the name hehe! I will add that to the list tomorrow. About the fire resistance, I need to experiment a little bit with it but I'm sure it comes in very viable in multiple situations in this bracket, so I'll keep them in the guide for now but might change Keeshan's to optional indeed, since the loss of the armor is quite painful aswell.

But, I'm off to bed for now!

Don't tell people to get cleansed spaulders because then they miss out on the BiS gloves if they're ally.
Serpentis' Gloves aren't BiS. But I'll get back to that tonight.

looks nice so far, but im not even messing around right now... when i read the "It's 04:00 AM" i looked at my time and it was 4:00 AM. haha that kinda messed with me and i had to say it. cant wait to see this finished, i hope it has macro's and stuff cuz i want to make a hpal soon so this will be a great source of information for me.
