Personally I've been stocking up on https://www.wowhead.com/item=190452/primal-flux for whenever a free weekend shows up so I can do a bunch of DF blacksmithing.
https://www.wowhead.com/item=2460/ . If you have Kirin Tor reputation - prices will go down slightly. Also i recommend you to farm https://www.wowhead.com/item=124671/ from time to time.

I have been successfully selling this on the AH for more than I bought it for, so not only is it gold storage, it is actually a small return on investment.

Since it's Pirate Day today, I tested Big Bag of Booty, and it only returned about 10% of what it should (around 25 gold). Either this will change again in the future or it is no longer a viable storage option for f2p...
(tested this both in and outside of chromie time. no lorewalking)

The booty bags aren't a good storage mechanic so much as a way for F2Ps to transfer gold between toons. Similar for the noblegarden eggs.
