Hey all!
I'm still somewhat new to the community, but the more time I spend working on my F2P toon, I'm finding more info that I kind of wish I knew about earlier. I'm going to start documenting these finds here, so that they can benefit the rest of the community.
So far most of what I've done is questing Alliance side, so at the moment, most of my tips pertain to that. I intend to do all the quests available to F2P, so as I finish the Alliance side quests, I'll be adding more to this thread. When I finish the Alliance quests, I'll start a Horde toon and do the same.
In other words, this thread will be updated regularly, so stay tuned.
Noteworthy Quests:
Most of this is just fluff, or handy tools... There's already many of guides out there about which quests to get Best-In-Slot (BIS) gear from, so I'm not going to focus so much on stats, but more on things that look neat, or have some kind of unique utility to them - that kind of thing.
Alliance:
[Extinguish the Fires]
Start, but do not complete this quest. This is a quest from the Iron Forge Air Field. When you start it, you'll get an item called [Firefighting Gear] which, while in your inventory, will add a cool model to your character's back of a backpack made of two water tanks. If you want the tanks to go away, just bank them. Even with the item in your inventory, the backpack model seems to come and go randomly with deaths and loading screens - it will come back, so fear not. If all else fails, banking and retrieving the item will get the model back on your toon pretty much 100% of the time.
[Prisoners of War]
Start, but do not complete this quest. When you start it, you will get a backpack called [Bravo Company Field Kit]. Using the field kit will unlock several unique abilities. The most notable of which, and only ability that can be used outside of the quest zone, is [Distraction] which will throw a confused rat at the targeted location. Fun stuff. I think some of the quests after this one will have you use the backpack as well, so you might be able to go a bit further in the chain without losing it. I'll experiment with this on another toon, since I don't want to risk losing the backpack on my main. ;-)
[Tree's Company]
Starting (not completing) this quest will provide [Tree Disguise Kit]. This quest is kind of limiting since the tree disguise kit can only be used in one place. HOWEVER, you can use this right before you enter a BG (after your que pops hit tree disguise then enter) You can also use it then hearth. (Thank you Arknoodle for sharing this information)
[The Bloodcurse Legacy]
As you're doing the Draenai starter quests, you'll eventually get a quest starter in the mail from Admiral Odesyus. Being a f2p player, you won't be able to actually take this item from your mailbox to start the quest, which may seem problematic, but really all you have to do is hoof it over to Admiral Odesyus and speak to him face to face, and he'll give you the quest in person.
[The Bloodcursed Naga]
This is the next quest in the chain after The [The Bloodcurse Legacy]. One thing to note about this quest is that starting it will give you a [The Captain's Kiss] buff which increases swimspeed by 60% (mount speed), and allows underwater breathing for 20 minutes. For classes that don't have nifty things like Aquatic Form (aka, everyone except Druids) this buff might could be an invaluable time saver if you have some swimmin' to do... like swimming from Dun Morogh to Vashj'ir, for example. The buff is removed by death, so if you are doing Vashj'ir work or sometihng that will have you swimming in dangerous waters, you'll probably want to set your hearth as close to the dangerous location as possible; get the buff; hearth to location; and repeat as necessay when you die. Not sure if this stacks with Aquatic form or Sea Turtle move speed. Anyway, be aware of this tool.
[The Hopeless Ones...]
The next quest in the chain after [The Bloodcursed Naga]. This one also provides the swim buff upon accepting the quest. The following quest does not apply the buff, so this one will be your last chance.
[Ending the Bloodcurse]
The final quest in the previously mentioned chain. This one doesn't provide the swim buff, but it does give [Wheel of the Lost Hope] for completing it, which a shield that looks like the steering wheel of a pirate ship... so, nifty cosmetic item. Yar!
-Another alternative to get the same model is going for [Buckler of the Seas] in Westfall, which is given to you after you complete the quest [The Coastal Menace]. Said quest also gives you a really nice torch, so you should consider both options. - Info provided by Violettress.
[Rock Lobster]
This is one of the Stormwind fishing dailys. Starting it will give you a buff called [Water Gliding] which is similar to the one mentioned in the Bloodcurse quest chain. It allows underwater breathing, and increases swim speed by 50% for 15 minutes... not quite as good as the Bloodcurse version, but easier to access, and you don't have to worry about not turning in a quest in order to maintain access to it; you just need to accept the daily on the correct day.
[Live Bait]
Starting this quest will provide [Grimnur's Bait] which will turn you red for 5 minutes. Usable anywhere.
[Nolkai's Words]
Completing this quest will give [Nolkai's Lantern], among other things. Just a lantern your toon will carry.
[Alien Predators]
Completing this quest will give [Old Elekk Prod], among other options. The model used for the prod, which is a 1h mace btw, is the same as the one used for torches, just minus the fire... so you can get an unlit torch here, and a lit torch else were, and swap them to make it look as though your toon is lighting and putting out a torch.
[The Coastal Menace]
Completing this quest will give [Grayson's Torch], among other options. This is an off-hand stat item than can be equipped by any class; it is a lit torch.
["I TAKE Candle!"]
Completing this quest will give [Kobold Candle], among other options. This is an off-hand stat item than can be equipped by any class; it is a LIT STICK OF DYNAMITE!
[Filthy Paws]
Completing this quest will give [Filthy Paw], among other options. This is an off-hand fist weapon; it is a... filthy... paw. Rar.
[Heartfelt Appreciation]
Completing this quest will give [Star Shooter], among other options. This is a wand that's basically a star-on-a-stick that 'drips' fire. It deals 'Holy' damage, which I understand is rare for wands, and offers +1 int.
[Assault on Menethil Keep]
Completing this quest will give [Wand of Infectious Dementia], among other options. This is a wand that's basically a skull-on-a-stick. It deals 'Shadow' damage.
[Lake Everstill Clean Up]
Completing this quest will give [Indiscriminate Wand], among other options. This is a wand that's basically a skull-on-a-stick. It deals 'Shadow' damage.
[Remembrance of Auberdine]
Completing this quest will give [Withers], among other options. This is a companion pet that looks like a Druid in tree form.
[The Titans' Terminal]
Completing this quest will give [Unidentified Cooking Utensil], among other options. This is an offhand stat item that can be equipped by any class; it's a frying pan.
[Bravo Company Field Kit: Chloroform]
Completing this quest will give [Vial of Chloroform], among other options. This is an offhand stat item that can be equipped by any class; it's a Vial of Chloroform.
[The Eye of Paleth]
Starting (not completing) this quest will give [Cursed Eye of Paleth]. This is an offhand stat item that can be equipped by any class; it's a black orb with a fiery glow; if you want to hang onto it, don't turn in the quest. (according to the comments at WoWhead, the quest CAN be abandoned without destroying the item; but completing the quest WILL destroy it.
[Respect for the Fallen]
Accepting (not completing) this quest will give [Cloak of Cenarius]. This is a back slot item that can be equipped by any class; it's a very Druidic/Shamanistic looking cloak. Completing the quest will remove the cloak, so if you're into cosmetic items, you might want to just keep the quest active.
[Feeding the Hungry and the Hopeless]
Accepting (not completing) this quest will give [Westfall Stew]. "This is a very fun item you can use for a nice dinner on the GS inn roof with all your friends! YUMMY!! "Don't forget to NOT COMPLETE the quest or your stew will be lost! -- Info provided by VCheetah.
Horde:
[Survey the Lakeshore]
Start, but do not complete this quest. You will be given [Surveyor's Beacon], which will summon a female Goblin. She will fight for you, but doesn't do squat for damage... at best, she can act as a meat shield for you while you work on something else like gathering of fighting another mob, but she only has 266 hp so she'll die pretty quick. I think of her more as a companion pet than anything... and who wouldn't want a pet Goblin?!
[The Terrible Tinkers of the Ruined Reaches]
Completing this quest will give [Spring Gadget], among other options. This is an off-hand stat item that is remote with a button, joystick, and antenna.
[Azsharite Experiment Number Two]
Once the quest is started, speak to the quest giver to be [Shrunkified], which makes you tiny, and allows you to mount nearby rats. I haven't found any noteworthy utility for the tininess yet, but I'll do some experimenting with this to see if I can find any actual value in the ability. Edit- I got nothin. The buff doesn't persist through summons and doesn't last long enough to get anywhere noteworthy. If you get on your mount (a normal one, not the rat) while tiny, and click out of the buff while you're moving, it bugs out the running animation and your mount will move it's legs about 10x faster than it should. Unfortunately, this does not increase your actual move speed.
[Renewable Resource]
Starting this quest will give you an [Arcane Charge] which can be used anywhere. It's basically a ball of blueish energy. Completing the quest will destroy the item. Keeping this quest active, however, will stop you from getting the [Faded Wizard Hat] so unless you really, really like the shiny blue ball, I'd recommend completing the quest and continuing the chain.
[Farewell, Minnow]
Completing this quest will give [Faded Wizard Hat]. This will turn you into a random model of many of the quest NPC's involved in the chain. Unfortunately, removing the hat will also remove the disguise... which wasn't always the case... BLIZZARD! Why must you always ruin items like this with a totally uncalled for nerf?! ...it's like the [Noggenfogger Elixir] all over again. Q_Q
[Extermination]
Completing this quest will give [Honorary Gob Squad Shield], among other options. This is a very unique looking shield... nothing really spectacular about... looks like a piece of scrap metal... but I'm not sure if there's another shield in the game that shares its model, so it stands out.
[Dar'Khan's Lieutenants]
Completing this quest will give [Reforged Quel'dorei Crest], among other options. This is a shield that is shaped like half of the Blood Elf symbol.
[The Dwarven Spy]
Completing this quest will give [Bloodhawk Claymore], among other options. This is a pretty slick looking 2h sword... visually, it looks more like something I'd expect to see drop from a level 70 raid boss than a level 4 starter quest!
[The Traitor's Destruction]
Completing this quest will give [Sin'dorei Warblade] (2h sword) or [Staff of the Sun] (staff), among other options. Similar to the previously mentioned quest, these items look like level 70 raid drops... yay BC gear!
[Arborcide]
Completing this quest will give [Chopped Off Ancient Limb], among other options. This is a 1h mace that looks like it should be a 2h staff. It's huge. Definitely some transmog value here.
[A Growing Problem]
Start, but do not complete this quest. You will receive [Tonga's Totem], which will summon an eagle companion pet. It can be summoned anywhere. (Ty "R Prime" for sharing this info!)
Both Factions:
[Stink Bombs Away!] ( A / H )
This is a Hallow's End daily that sends you to an opposing factions capitol city to drop stink bombs.... it also happens to be a great way to get to the other side of the continent; just log out while your riding the broom around the opposing faction's city, and when you log back in, you'll be at the nearest GY
Wowhead Profiler:
I'm the kind of guy who you might call a "completionist." This is especially true when it comes to quests in MMO's. Most quests in WoW can be found in a 'hub' or gathering of quest givers, but there's also a fair amount of quests started by NPC's in some oddball location that you'd normally have no interest in visiting; and quests started by items dropped from mobs... both of which are very easy to miss.
IMO, the best way to track down these quests is with the Wowhead Profiler. It tells you which quests you have, and have not done in any given zone, making the holes easy to spot.
For an example profile, here's mine: http://www.wowhead.c...peak.haliaeetus
Take note of the "Quests" tab.
Exploration:
Lately I've been working on the [Explore <zone>] achievements and have a few tips that might help you do the same with few...er... bumps in the road. The fastest way to go about this will be to utilize the help of a p2p account that has a flying passenger mount... which, unless you already have a friend who can do this for you, will probably not happen. After you get to the level 40+ zones, things start getting... fun. So prepare yourself for a lot of dying, a lot of corpse running, and a lot of 2 minute res timers. (It was 5 mins back in the day, so at least be happy that was nerfed
)
First off, get yourself a BIG mount. Ally, that means an Elekk; Horde, that means a Kodo. Why? Water. The larger mounts can run in deeper water than the other mounts before switching from running (+60% movespeed) to swimming (-40% movespeed)... and when you're being chased by something that can swallow you whole, that extra second or two of running opposed to swimming can be the difference between another corpse run or not... and you'll run into water more than you might expect, so the big mount will definitely be worth having (as a f2p twink you'll probably get the rep eventually anyway, so you might as well do it before starting your exploration journey).
Beware of fast mobs. There are a few things that, if you aggro, you will die. There's not really a good visual indicator of which mobs will be fast or slow... you're going to outrun some cheetahs and get chased down by some turtles, so don't think "that looks fast/slow" because you won't know until you aggro it. Once you do figure out which mobs are the fast ones in a given zone, avoid them like the plague.
Use the terrain to your advantage. If something's chasing you, it paths along the ground no matter what. If you jump down a steep hill; it will run down the steep hill, and you just got further away from it than you would have been otherwise. If a mob is in your way and there's a tree nearby - aggro it, have it chase you around the tree, and continue exploring. Keep an eye out for these kinds of opportunities.
Know where the graveyards are. I recommend using Wowhead's data on Spirit Healers to see their locations. It's often faster to suicide and res at the nearest graveyard than it is to hoof it everywhere.
Bug out the graveyards. When you're dead, you can res at (pretty much) any graveyard you want. If you die, run to a new graveyard, and attempt to res; you'll be ported back to the graveyard you started at. The trick is, once you're dead, run toward the graveyard you want to res at, and when you get near it, click "Return to Graveyard" at the top of your screen. It will port you to the nearest one, instead of the one you started at. Then res.
There are some areas you simply cannot access without the help of p2p. I haven't finished all the zones yet, so there will likely be a few more added to the list, but here are the ones I've found so far that annot be accessed without assistance:
Azeroth:
Outland:
Northrend:
Cataclysm:
IMPORTANT: follow these steps before exploring the Cataclysm zones, or certain locations within them will cause you to be disconnected, and chain-disconnected immediately when you try to log in again until you either follow these steps, or petition a GM to move your toon to a safe location.
1.) Go to: Computer > Local Disk (C > Program Files > World of Warcraft > WTF
2.) Open "Config" with Notepad.
3.) Find: SET accounttype "RT"
4.) Replace "RT" with "CT"
5.) Open the WoW launcher; it will download 3.9GB of Cataclysm data. Let it download completely.
6.) Log in, and you will be able to explore Cataclysm content without getting disconnected. (Ty Kincaide for sharing this info!)
Macros:
This one's nifty. Basically it "right clicks" every gray item in your inventory; so, if you click it while a vendor window is open, it will sell all the gray items in your inventory.
WARNING: Do NOT click it if a vendor window is not open, or it will instead attempt to equip all the gray items in your inventory. Do NOT use if you have any gray items you wish to keep (RP gear, etc).
/script for bag = 0,4,1 do for slot = 1, GetContainerNumSlots(bag), 1 do local name = GetContainerItemLink(bag,slot); if name and string.find(name,"ff9d9d9d") then DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage("Selling "..name); UseContainerItem(bag,slot) end; end; end
-- There's also an addon to do this SellJunk - Bags & Inventory - World of Warcraft Addons - Curse -- Info provided by epicf2p.
This one is mainly for healers, but can be used with pretty much any class. This also comes down to personal preference, but for me, mouseover macros are the way to go for healing; saves a ton of clicking, makes your life easier... and some folks hate it... which I'll never understand. Anyway, if you're a healer and haven't tried the wonder of mouseover, I strongly encourage you to give it a shot. The basic version looks like this:
Option 1: /use [@mouseover]HealingSpell
--Option 2: /use [@mouseover,help,nodead][] SpellName ,will default to your target or yourself if you do not have a mouseover. The basic [@mouseover] will fail if you don't have a mouseover, which is counterintuitive to many.-- Info provided by pinochet.
Just mousover the unit frame of the person you want to heal; hit the keybinding; and you'll start casting at that person. Allows you to target other things like bosses so you can monitor who it's targeting (who will need healing) and makes it easier to squeeze in DPS as a healer cuz you're not screwing with your targets constantly. Complex version looks like this:
#showtooltip [help,@mouseover]HealingSpell;[nohelp]DamageSpell;HealingSpell
/console Sound_EnableSFX 0
/run UIErrorsFrame:Clear()
/console Sound_EnableSFX 1
/use [help,@mouseover]HealingSpell;[nohelp]DamageSpell;HealingSpell
When you're moused over a friendly unit frame, it will do the same thing as the previous macro; this one simply allows you to add an offensive spell to the keybinding as well, which saves space on your action bars and keeps things in reach of your fingers. Basically it gives priority to your mouseover, so careful where you leave your cursor or you'll accidentally use healing spells on people when you don't mean to; but when you don't have a mouseover, it will react to your target instead... it it's a friendly target, you'll use the same heal; but if it's an attackable target, it will use the offensive spell instead. As a pally, I have most of my abilities mashed into 4 buttons with this type of macro, which allows me to concentrate on what's going on in the game world, and not on my UI. BTW, the /console and /run lines get rid of those annoying "That ability is on cooldown" errors at the top of your screen, and silences that annoying "whoosh" sound the game makes when you try to use an ability that's on CD.
This one's A nice fishing macro. Replace "Strong Fishing Pole" with whichever pole you're using. This macro will equip your fishing pole and [Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat]; use the hat to apply a lure to your fishing pole; and to cast your line! You'll never forget to apply your lure again!
/equip Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat
/equip Strong Fishing Pole
/use Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat
/run UIErrorsFrame:Clear()
/use Fishing
More info coming as I find it. If you have anything you'd like to contribute, feel free to post.</zone>

Azeroth:
Eastern Kingdoms
Isle of Quel'Danas
You will need a summon to get there. The rest can use either a summon or a flying passenger mount.
Outland:
Hellfire Peninsula
Throne of Kil'jaeden
Negrand
The Twilight Ridge
Terokkar Forest
The Barrier Hills / Skettis
Shadowmoon Valley
Netherwing Ledge
Blade's Edge Mountains
Forge Camp: Wrath / Forge Camp: Terror / Vortex Summit / Crystal Spine / Bash'ur Landing
Netherstorm
Socrethar's Seat
Northrend:
You will not be able to get into any of these zones as f2p. Not even with a Summon.
Mount Hyjal
This place is a serious pain in the ass. If you die in Mount Hyjal, your spirit will be sent to Ashenvale... so to res, you'll have to spirit-run through Ashenvale, Felwood, Winterspring, and to wherever you died in Mount Hyjal... usually to make a few yards of progress and then get eaten again. So unless you want to literally devote a few days to corpse running for 10 achievement points, just save this one for when you've got a p2p to fly you around.
Vashj'ir
The trick to enter this zone is to head to Menethil Harbor and swim southwest until you hit the northern border of Dun Morogh. Continue west until you reach the northwest tip of Dun Morogh, then hit the deep water in a way that brings you from Dun Morogh to Vashj'ir with the least swim-time (just eye-ball it based on the map). I highly reccommend you use some kind of swim-speed enhancer, be it the Sea Turtle, the buffs mentioned in the Quest setion of this thread, potions, w/e. If you're geared for healing, you should be able to actually heal through [Fatigue] long enough to get to through the other side.
Twilight Highlands
The only tricky part here is getting to the Vermillion Redoubt, which is the part in the northwest of the zone that usually requires a flying mount to get to... thing is, you DO have a flying mount here... you just have to be dead to use it.
-Method 1, described by OP: What I did was run up to the mountains on the northeast edge of the Vermillion Redoubt, get killed by a mob, death-fly to one of the 'bumps' on the mountain that's higher and closer to the Vermillion Redoubt, then deleted my hearthstone and opened the 'character stuck' (similar to opening a GM ticket) menu and clicked "Teleport to Graveyard" (aka suicide). Death fly to the next highest/closest section of the mountain and repeat until you explore the zone.

-Method 2, brought to you by Solvogero: You don't need to delete your hearthstone and unstick your character. Just have one of the ogres kill you at the base of the mountain and corpse hop [uh, corpse fly] up to the big platform area. Then make two gearsets, one fully geared with max stam and one naked. Then get naked, immediately equip all your gear, and make a small downward jump. It obviously takes a lot smaller fall to kill you since the second you equip your gear, your %-health is pretty low. (kind of like a Ghetto Lifetap) It only took me 3 corpse hops (could have done it in two) to get over the mountain.
Uldum
Only thing to know about Uldum is to make sure to follow the steps written in yellow before venturing into the zone, as it has many locations that will chain-disconnect you otherwise.
Deepholm
You will not be able to get into this zone as f2p. Not even with a Summon.
/run UIErrorsFrame:Clear()
/run UIErrorsFrame:Clear()
/use Fishing
More info coming as I find it. If you have anything you'd like to contribute, feel free to post.</zone>
