Gear advice for genuine Starters (Horde)

Tinkerton

Legend
As said elsewhere, we're basically lending the opportunities Blizzard's new marketting tool - unlimited free Trials - offers. As a result, Battlegrounds often have genuine newcomers, who may not exactly be geared to twink standards.

This can lead to frustrations on both sides, some being more...vocal in this than they perhaps should be. 'Go twink' isn't of course the most helpful advice that could be given, and GM's being confronted with complaint tickets isn't beneficial.

So to give a few pointers people can give to genuine newcomers, here are a couple of Quest (lines) that can offer newcomers some nice gear that doesn't involve the...haphazard LFD experience.

As Horde is obviously the trickier one, I'll start with those.

1) ''Fly to the Mor'shan Rampant for nice quests and the PvP Vendor nearby, that has e.g. Blue Weapons for sale''

Due to the new FP policy of Blizz, at level 20 you can fly directly from Ogrimmar to the Rampant. The Quests that start there offer Shoulders and other pieces, are - for cata standards - fun to do, and relatively quick to do.

Most notably Find Gorat! - Quest - World of Warcraft (Find Gorat !) starts here, the chain that leads to Rain of Destruction (Blue weapon) and Dread Head Redemption (Bow and Ring)

Leather boys migth want to actually DO Pierce Their Heart! - Quest - World of Warcraft (Pierce their Heart!) as it offers nice wrists Scrupleless Bracers - Item - World of Warcraft Note that you only need to pick it up for the other Questlines mentioned.

2) ''Fly to Ratchet and do the Quest nearby this Goblin port''

Ratchet offers some fun Quest lines:

- Gazlowe: Find Baron Longshore - Quest - World of Warcraft ( Find Baron Longshore) leading to Gazlowe's Fortune Gazlowe's Fortune - Quest - World of Warcraft and its nice rewards which at 20 can be done within 10 minutes or so.

Note: as Rogue you can do it at the minimum level at ease in 10 minutes as well, and it offers only a couple of k's XP. You do not need to fight Longshore - he takes a couple of seconds to spawn after you loot the Chest, and you can Stealth away - or just run :p

- Wharfmaster: Take it up with Tony - Quest - World of Warcraft Take it up with Tony, leading to Mutiny Mon! and it's nice Cloth Boots/Leather wrists and stuff.

Note that the Wanted Quest (also open to Alliance) has some +2/+2 rewards and takes place at the same locale.

During levelling (both Factions): It's Gotta be the Horn It's Gotta be the Horn - Quest - World of Warcraft offers nice Hunter stat-stick and Leather caster boots, as well as a weak Bear Bow for those finicky warriors out there (my Gnome has one ;) )

3) ''Fly to Valormok from Ogrimmar and do the Quests''

Personally I went for the Shield of the Barrens as I always liked the challenge of the Centaurs, but besides ultimately leading to a nice Blue caster Shield, this Quest hub has Where's My Head? - Quest - World of Warcraft (where's my head?) that is followed by Lightning Strike Assassination - Quest - World of Warcraft (Lightning Strike Assassination) offering

Gloves of Unmitigated Badassery - Item - World of Warcraft .

Note that you don't need to use the parachute, running away works just as well ^^

I like this idea, and this thread.

I already have a macro regarding Mor'Shan that I click when I see folks lacking the neck/ring/weap, perhaps I'll create one for the others as well.

Only thing I'll add: "Ask a guard in Org where the officer's lunge is, and find the vendor selling the Insignia of the Horde for 55 honor." -- I've seen folks that had noticed the heirloom insignia but not the BoP one and thus think they had to save up thousands of honor for it.

I'll post some of my tips in here when I think of them.

TIP: When you reach lvl 5 train skinning, buy a skinning knife, and I like to buy my faction tabard but its not required until lvl 15. While questing or grinding kill every skinnable beast you see and keep your light leathers.

TIP: Medium leather is our version of endgame leather. Any that you come across should be stored for later use. Ruined leather scraps, light leather, and medium leather are the only valuable skin throw away/vendor all your Light Hides.

While true for most classes and at 20, for Leather wearing Horde classes Light Leather Pants esp. can serve you a long time if you're unlucky with the boss drops and want to wear something decent in LFD, and the Caster Drop Recipes/Murloc Scale Vendor Recipes require them as well.

But for ultimate BG toon you're right, and some of the Ashenvale Quests offer Green gear that is equal or better than the Crafted gear.

Thank you, also for the Insignia (so used to it being cheaper - same as the Battle Standard btw, 500 honor).

A new one:

''Fly to Bilgewater Harbor and pick up the Quests"

Turns out in a stealth-change by 4.0.3. Blizzard made Cata Questing somewhat less linear, adressing one of the major issues people had with the Cata Questing experience (which makes the stealth somewhat mystifying).

More to the point, you can now pick up two Quest- lines in Azshara without finishing the earlier Quest-lines (and so get to keep your green BFF as a result. And there was much rejoicing.)

- Operation Fishgut - Quest - World of Warcraft Operation Fishgut from the Wrenchmen Recruitment posters (the Bligewater Hero's Call boards)

Quick at 20 and plenty of Goblin interaction, blowing up Naga and other stuff, ultimately leading to Shore Leave - Quest - World of Warcraft shore leave .

Besides a good-looking Gun, the rewards include +3/+3/+3 Hit Rating caster Leather wrists, and Merger Boots - which are identical to the Cloth Boots from Mutiny Mon! from Ratchet, allowing for more freedom in gear choices (too bad I had already done Mutiny).

For the fashionista's: the Gob Squad shield has the same color scheme as the Ashenvale Mail Greens, and Quick Buck Leggings are black leather pants. Both are Green rewards.

- Azshara Blues - Quest - World of Warcraft azshara Blues

The new breadcumb that starts off the Quesline with Kalec(zos). Long and with mini-games (aaaargh), but besids a nice story it leads to an almost-equivalent of Foreman's Leggings/nice Leather Chest and, after returning to Bligewater, the Vanity Faded Wizard's Hat.

Correct me if im wrong, but you can use those hides to get you LW up without using your leather, right?

Yes and no.

Curing a Hide will level your Profession for a very small interval, and Medium Hide is (on top of my head) a 100 Recipe.

The problem however is that the droprate of Light Hide is on most applicable mobs 7% or less, so if you level your Profession while levelling you'll be staring at quite some XP (making the Craftables less usefull) till you have multiple Hides, and in general you'll be better off (as in: quicker) to just forget about the small Curing interval, and Skin a couple of more <insert mob of choice> for the leathers.

You can use light hides for skill ups in interval below:
Cured Light Hide

: 35,55,65,75

I practice I've used it for approximately 7-10 skill ups. I generally use this to shorten the gap to
Embossed Leather Gloves

: 55,85,100,115

Obviously theres more than one way to skin the cat so to speak. Speaking from the standpoint of strictly farming the LW mats I found it easiest/most convenient to collect and level strictly off of recipes that use Light Leather. Dont forget bag space is usually an issue for trial leveling. I also thought it was important to get across the point, dont throw away your Medium Leathers that you get out of WC locked boxes or whatever, you'll just end up having to grind them later.

All thanks for your tips, keep 'em coming :)

- Go after the Cold Iron Pick iso Reef Axe

Not only does it (also) drop pretty often from the must-go Boss in the fastest Dungeon (Hogger, Stockades), it also counts as a Mining pick, freeing up bagspace (no Honor bags for Horde).

- ''Could we do Serakis - the Boss near the Fathom Core - as well?''

Getting your average PUG to kill Serakis as well can be a bit tricky, and at 20 you'll run the risk of aggroing a lot of mobs (resulting in one of the few 'trains' still possible in the re-styled Dungeons). Pointing out that Sera'kis is a few paces away from the Fathom Core - required for the Quest Amongst the Ruins - Quest - World of Warcraft amongst the ruins - can improve your odds of getting that Boss kill.

Note that turning in the Quest may not be that handy, it (basically) creates a follow up if you're of a higher level, leading to some nice rewards that now basically gather dust (if Blizz ever lowered the requirement for those Quests as well, you wouldn't hear me complain).

- ''If you want Head-gear, you can do the Fishing Dailies in Undercity and Thunder Bluff''

Of course you can also do those in Og, and if you want to get Rep with a certain Faction you'de best go for that Faction's Capital (duh).

However, the Dailies in Undercity and Thunder Bluff give about 93 silver a piece, while those in Og give only 13 sp or so.

(Note that it's the same with Darnassus/Ironforge vs SW)

- The teleporter to Gnomeregan is still there.

Now in Grom'gol Base Camp, STV, (next to the Inn/Zeppelin tower) it will teleport you inside the actual Instance, with a return pod inside the Instance as well. You don't need any attunements etc. anymore to use it. It works at 20.

(I could also add the tip ''Also play other games when fed up with WoW' - personally I'm playing Drakensang Online's Open Beta, which btw has implemented PvP just a few days ago and an interesting limit of 5 accounted kills of someone/24 hrs - but perhaps that would be a bit too pessimistic ;) )

Some Vendors of note

a) Wallace the Blind Wallace the Blind - NPC - World of Warcraft

At the beach near the Skittering Dark, NW Silverpine Forest. Has a limited supply of Healing Potions.

b) Rathis Tomber Rathis Tomber - NPC - World of Warcraft

Tranquillien. Requires Friendly Rep or better with Tranquillien, and completing teh Quest to get his goods. Note that this requires to combat 4-5 mobs, you can't loot the Quest object when in combat.

Offers a limited supply of Scrolls, Herbs, and most notably Ore (Copper, Tin and Silver). Silver Ore is very rare though.

c) Murhane Murhane - NPC - World of Warcraft

Southern Barrens, Camp Una'fe. Nearest flight point is Vendetta Point, though dying and rezzing at the Overgrowth GY is the fastest way to reach him, you should be able to reach the camp unharmed even with rez sickness. He's one of the few Vendors selling (limited supply) Medium Leather.

Always level up LM by making gloves, then you can Disenchant the gloves to get your Enchanting up.
