This quick guide (audio & text instructions provided in the video) will tell you how you can get loot from an LFR boss without being there for the kill, or even staying in the LFR group.

How I discovered this bug
After having an attempt on LFR Galakras and failing, I was ready for a break. However, someone started the boss encounter. I considered giving it another go, but wanted to do a talent switch first. Unfortunately, I was already in combat and could not do so. I left the group.
A few hours later I got a letter from the postmaster containing a loot bag. Since I hadn't killed any LFR bosses in quite a few days, I knew that it was from Galakras. To double check, I checked my raid lockouts. Sure enough, I had credit for killing Galakras in LFR, even though I never actually killed him.
