I believe that part of the "Empire Strikes Back" appeal is that is a pop culture movie where the bad guys win!

I think a recent movie that was impactful for a similar reason was "Avenger 3: Infinity War" (where the villain Thanos wins and destroy half of all life in the universe).

Word around the internet is that "Star Wars 8: The Last Jedi" was supposed to be another "Empire Strikes Back", but the directors didn't commit enough to do a bad ending because it would make people sad and reduce profits for Disney (don't forget that the all the new-new SW films were released in Christmas, a cheerful period).

The phantom menace is 22 years old, which puts its release right around the prime age for most of this forum seeing it as kids in theaters. I figure that explains a lot of it.

I read a lot of the Timothy Zahn books in the mid 90s so I was pretty deep into the Star Wars universe. As a freshman in high school, I remember the excitement of the Phantom Menace trailers when they first released 1998. The end result didn't quite live up to expectations, but at least it wasn't 7-9.
