i took my horde rogue and switched to alliance to get ToW chest and SoW ring quests 11 days ago. it was instant no wait.
they popped me at SW inn (picked human) there were some instant achievements that popped which were horde ones converted in to ally ones. i wasn't paying attention if i got XP but i think i did.
i went to FP to go to westfall, when i landed 150 XP flashed on the screen. wasn't a issue for me XP wise, i was sorta pissed i had to fly back to SW to pay 10G to turn off XP again. so check your XP bar after you switch
if you are going to do the same type thing are are close on XP beware of the race you pick. for example if you convert a NE rogue to a UD rogue, your XP will turn on. in the process you will pop in UC get discovery, have to go outside UC and get discovery getting on zeppelin, land in durator and may get discovery and discovery going into orgimmar to turn off your XP.
a horde druid switching to NE maybe get SoW ring would pop in darnussas discovery, go outside to catch boat/flight get discovery, land in auberdine discovery, take boat to SW discovery
if your switching your ally caster to horde, you may want to pick orc/troll races to minimize discovery XP and you'll be right in orgimmar to turn off your XP again. same thing for horde, try to pick a human if possible.
other than that, if you are close on XP, i would recommend you think out what you are going to have to travel thru and before you do the faction change and while XP is off, try to pre-discover those areas then do the faction switch
