ENJOYS GUIDE TO SUCCESSFUL RETRIBUTION

Hello everyone. I know it's in the wrong section, couldn't post in the guide section for some reason.

I think it's better to keep it in the 39 bracket section for the moment as we're still trying to attract more people. Thank you.

I made this guide after several requests.

Anyway let's start off.

This Guide is meant to lead people in the right direction, most of the gear sets for Retribution would most likely be preference, I'm just pinpointing in the right direction for an ideal survival/dmg overall ret paladin, as I like it myself.

As a retribution paladin I've noticed a couple of things, squishyness, without our Hand of Freedom, we're mostly the same as protection warriors. We can get kited around when our Judgement "aka charge for warriors" is on cooldown. Still, with the boost on word of glory from the glyph, you'd most likely survive. We are heavy hitters, so we make a big benefit of staying close to the target.

Tempest Verdict shouldn't be used unless your pretty sure you could finish your target off by using HoJ on a target during "HIS" trinket cooldown, with 3 holy powers ready and an instant exorcism. If you hammer along with this your target would most likely be chinese noodles in one go.

As for the gear:

Headslot: Helm of Exile from the quest Jammal'an the Prophet

This head would these days be best in slot due to a massive amount of hit rating and stamina. The agility serves only for crit these days.

I see this helm as the only viable choice.

Neck: Medal of Courage from the quest Saving Yenniku for the Horde and The Lost Tablets of Will for the Alliance.

or for "the" alternative set: Gazlowe's Charm

which is a world drop.

Shoulders: Revelosh's Spaulders 10stam/9stam/8strength would be my choice due to the huge burst people have in the 39 bracket these days. These shoulders are from the boss in Uldaman called Revelosh.

Anternative shoulders: Polished Spaulders of Valor

comes in the following stats: 12 stamina, 12 strength, 8 crit rating. These would be ideal if you'd want the extra crit and strength. You would obviously lose some stamina for this choice. These are Bind on Account shoulders and would cost you: 2,175 justice points.

Cloak: You have various choices here. Personally I would go for Cabalist Cloak of the bear with 7stamina/6 strength

for the alternative cloaks: you could go for Battlehard Cape from the quest: A Grim Discovery this one is for horde only.

Khan's Cloak is also a viable choice, but in my opinion, those extra hit points wouldn't matter too much considering the gain from hit you'd gain later on. This is a world drop.

Scorpashi Cape is a decent choice, considering the lack of crit rating, worth it untill you'd get a Battlehard Cape or Cabalist Cloak.

Chest: Again, many viable choices: It would be worth a faction change if your alliance to get Blood-tinged Armor from the quest Trol'kalar . This chestpiece servers it's purpose. Massive amount of stamina and strength, also TBC enchantable.

Alternative: Polished Breastplate of Valor comes in the following stats: 14 stamina, 14 strength, 13 crit rating. This chestpiece would be for those who's Alliance and doesn't have the availability to faction change. This is not TBC enchantable. This cloak is a BoA item and will cost you: 2,175 Justice points

Another vilable chest: Scarlet Chestpiece this one wouldn't be worth the 19 stamina if you'd ask me, but well again, preference. This item is (after the latest patches) TBC enchantable.

Wrists: Revelosh's Armguards of power with the following stats: +8 stamina, +20 attack power.

or Revelosh's Armguards of the monkey with the following stats: +8 stamina, +6 stamina, +6 agility.

Gloves: There has been many debates about which gloves are the best in slot these days, I will post the alternatives: my current gloves Earthbound Handgrips of the bear. With the following stats: +9 strength, +9 stamina.

Alternative: Bonelink Gauntlets of the bear with the following stats: +9 stamina +9 strength.

Reticulated Bone Gauntlets these gloves are viable if you'd go for attack power. But they doesn't serve a great cause in this bracket right now.

Stormgale Fists these gloves would only be alternative if you'd want hit cap in another way.

Belt: We have two viable belts these days. In this choice it's all up to preference.

Ogron's Sash and Boar Champion's Belt

both great belts, I tend to switch them every 5th minute.

Legs: Your ultimate choice would be Scarlet Leggings as of the major amount of strength and decent amount of stamina.

Alternative legs: Legguards of the Vault these would serve their purpose due to their big amount of stamina and decent amount of agility "crit rating" the hit rating doesn't really serve a purpose anymore as you'd hit the cap in other ways.

Ancient Legguards of the bear, with the following stats: +12 stamina +12 strength, a decent choice with a pair of extra stamina and a decent amount of strength, would only be viable if your tense on the stamina and strength part. Not as great as the ones above.

Boots: There are many choices here aswell: Ironheel Boots from the quest Scrounging would be your choice as it rewards a balanced set of stamina / strength.

Alternative: Black Ogre Kickers from rare boss drop. Decent choice, lose some strength and gain some stamina. These are only obtainable by the Alliance.

Ancient Greaves of the bear with the following stats: +9stamina +9strength.

This would be a great choice for the Horde.

Ring slot 1: Aquamarine Signet of the bear, with the following stats: +8 stamina, +7 strength, +20 attack power. You could also go the other way around with more strength than stamina, preference.

Ring slot 2: Tumultuous Ring of the soldier, with the following stats: +7stamina, +7strength, +7crit rating. From dungeon satchels.

Trinket 1: Arena Grand Master from the quest Arena Grandmaster Your BiS trinket no matter how many debates there are. Great absorbation and a whooping 12 stamina on top. BiS trinket for sure.

Trinket 2: Tidal Charm this trinket would be BiS in arena's if you'd ask me, fairly large cast range and an extra stun, defenitely worth it. Though overall Arena Grand Master beats it.

Trinket 3: Inherited Insignia of the Alliance Best in slot if you're not a human. This item will cost you 2,725 Justice Points.

Alternative Insignia of the Alliance for those who's lazy, or doesn't have a level 80 toon.

Weapons: Pendulum of Doom is the number one axe in-game for 39's at these hours and has allways been. This would be your ultimate choice, though it would take you years to get one unless your able to track one down and pay abnormous amounts of gold for it. I payed 12,000g + 60euro's for it myself.

Alternative: Bloodied Arcanite Reaper great axe if your unable to obtain Pendulum of Doom

Alternative: The Pacifier only axe for a 39 with 4 second speed, except Pendulum of Doom. would indeed give you some massive hits.

Alternative: Lumbering Ogre Axe Fair alternative if your unable in any way of obtaining the ones above.

I'm not going to link the enchants:

Head: None

Neck: None

Shoulders: None, I lost my character with the naxxramas enchant so I wouldn't know if that would still work.

Cloak: +20 spell penetration or +12 agility, both viable choices.

Chest: +6 all stats or +150HP, again both viable enchants, they both serves their purpose.

Shirt: None

Tabard: WINDFURY

Bracers: +12 stamina (would be the best in my opinion as we're in lack of stamina these days) or +12 strength. Both viable choices.

Gloves: +15 strength or +15 hit rating

Belt: None

Legs: +40 armor if their BoE or +32 armor on BoP

Boots: Boar's speed is useless for us paladins, as we gain +15% extra movement speed from the talent Pursuit of Justice. +12 stamina or Surefooted(+10 hit rating and +10 crit rating)

Ring 1: +4 all stats(375 enchanting required)

Ring 2: +4 all stats(375 enchanting required)

Trinket 1: None

Trinket 2: None

Glyphs:

Prime Glyph: Glyph of Word of Glory Your best choice as survival is the key to succesfull retribution.

Major Glyph: Glyph of Rebuke Your best choice to allways be on your toe, even when your out of mana.

Minor Glyph: Preferation mostly, but Glyph of Lay on Hands would be a great choice.

Profession 1: Enchanting (lvl 375) + The consortium "Honored". Will grant you +4 stats on each of your rings. This profession with the reputation with The Consortium will take you days, weeks to finish. But everything for Best in Slot right :)

Profession 2: Mining (lvl 300) Will grant you Toughness

Alternative Profession: Skinning (lvl 300) Will grant you Master of Anatomy

To top all of this off, I've made two different characters with the two "in my opinion" ideal sets:

Gear Set 1: Gear Set 1

Gear Set 2: Alternative Gear Set 2

Credits: Eloc especially for his help considering some gear pieces.

And everybody else for making this bracket what it is!

Constructive criticism and Helpfull pinpointers are appreciated.

Yours Truly Enjoy

will correct the guide tomorrow as I've heard there will be a lot of changes

Spellpen?

Unless Cata changes things, spellpen is pointless for paladins, as there is no player-obtainable holy resistance.

Word of Glory? OOM?

It's generally much more profitable as ret to use FoL to heal yourself, and save those HP for a TV burst. In that respect I'd go 5% CS crit or 15% TV damage. (Or, with Cata, HL after a kill, since Crusade will give a +300% on next HL after a kill)

WoG is highly situational, as Ret. Prot (due to chance to not consume HP) and holy is a whole different game.

Also, actually running OOM as ret is... well, rare. Being low enough that you can't cast rebuke... wow. HoJ range is what I use.

Let me elaborate.

How are you supposed to be able to stay at your target when you stop to use flash of light every second ? yes we do have a judgement which grants speed increase for 4 seconds, but this won't save you in a duel. Trust me. After such a timeloss as to use a flash of light (don't get me wrong, it is usefull when you absolutely have to). The target would've gotten way to far away from you, a judgement wouldn't do squat.

I herd spell penetration is best stat EU and US for paladin...maybe even best enchant worlde.

all shoulder enchats have a lvl requirement ( was it 59) so no more naxx :(

to stay on target you need insta cast heals so WoG. flash of light can be interrupted and it costs mana although havin judgement on the target gives mana back if you stop to heal your judgement may fall off. so you just dropped your mana gain and used your mana to a heal.. use WoG on urself when u have HP

ans there is no holy resistance there is no need for spell pen as any pala

In duels, you have a point. I don't really duel much though, I do BG's, and in BG's, there's nearly ALWAYS someone nearby to wack on. Trying to chase after that ranged guy who's happy to kite you to death is really a bad idea when you could be blowing up that rogue/druid/healer who got too close to the action.

Granted, I've mostly been playing XP-on for the past month or so, but I learned the hard way how effective it is to use FoL for healing and all your HP on TV's. I've got a 29 twink retadin I play around in XP-on in, and I was *matched* in damage and healing by a semi-twink horde retadin who was using FoL to heal and dumping HP on TV's, while I was spamming WoG. After that I started using FoL, and, well, it made a huge difference.
