Dungeons Are Changing More than We Thought

Just ran across this on WoW Insider's site about the latest changes to classic dungeons (fresh from Blizzcon):

The liveblog of the Dungeons and Raids panel is still underway, but Cory Stockton (lead content designer) and Scott Mercer (lead encounter designer) mentioned a number of changes for classic world dungeons in Cataclysm's first big content patch, 4.1. So far, this is what we know:

* They're going to keep creating wings Utgarde Keep and Utgarde Pinnacle cited as an example of a successful split. They're similar dungeons thematically, but if players had to tackle them both together they'd be pretty arduous.

* Mr. Mercer had an amusing phrase for the whole venture: "I did a pass through all the older dungeons, and we're doing what I call Cutting Out The Suck."

* Graveyards are more convenient No more nightmare 10-minute runs back from a distant graveyard to the depths of a dungeon.

* They're expecting a lot of new players in Cataclysm and they don't want older dungeons to be a roadblock. "We don't want dungeons to be left behind in the redo, we want them to be up-to-par with everything else." Dungeon sections with pointless trash will be trimmed. They should be "Easier for players to understand (and) easier to navigate."

* Dungeons that are confirmed "fixes" so far Uldaman, Maraudon, Sunken Temple, Wailing Caverns and Blackrock Depths.

* Uldaman overhauls The dungeon is being split into two separate wings. Ironaya will be final boss of the first portion of Uldaman; they felt that the epic feel of assembling the staff and opening her room would be a good ending. The latter portion of Uldaman will be accessed through the existing back-door entrance.

* Maraudon overhauls Like Uldaman, it's being split into two: The "living" section and the elemental portion with the Princess.

* Sunken Temple overhauls One of the floors will be cut completely, although this is a change that will ship with Cataclysm rather than with patch 4.1

* Wailing Caverns overhauls "Almost every boss has its own room now." Confusing portions have been cut.

* Blackrock Depths overhauls Teleporters added!

This might change instances, items, and drop rates a lot more than we were anticipating. Good thing is that most of the changes won't be til 4.1.

darn, no more nubez missing jumps.

Millions of us were able to learn WoW the way it was before. Guess there will just be an even larger population of morons running around at the endgame level then there are now.

ulda...really? getting to ironyana and getting the staff is stupid easy and takes 10 mins; which is great for new players i guess, but stupid easy for people used to ulda being 40+ before you even step foot in there

mara was 3 places before, orange, purp, and inner...so weird that it's being turned into 3, but w/e

ST i have no problem with cutting basement where you needed to know a specific order of statues in order to even enable the boss down there....thats legit and wont effect people, especially if the boss downstairs will auto be up and cut out the dumb statues

and as for BRD..yea that place sucked ass so gogo teleporters

WC was a pain in the asshole, at least for alliance who were used to cut-and-dried linear VC, so that is a welcome change as far as letting people know where to go, when

The instance changes are simply to make running specific instances less tedious. They're not removing any bosses or drops.

MMO-Champion states the following:

Classic Dungeons

* Classic dungeons have been revamped to be made shorter and less confusing. Dungeons such as Maraudon or Uldaman were really really long to get through.

* For example dungeons can be split into multiple wings. Uldaman will be broken up into 2 wings. Ironaya will be the final boss of the first wing for the Dungeon Finder.

* Maraudon will also be broken up into 2 wings as well. The dungeon now has a "living" section, and a lower section where Princess Theradras is.

* Other dungeons will be trimmed. The top portion of the Sunken Temple has been removed and only the bottom floor remains.

* Wailing Caverns's maze has been removed and bosses have been moved around to just make the instance smaller. Moving bosses wasn't hard because bosses didn't really have their own rooms.

Just because we had to doesnt mean it shouldnt be changed. =o

dude, wtf. Running around dungeons and getting lost was the most fun i had playing wow.

and i very much enjoyed my 2 hour adventures into BRD, especially navigating the fuck-you-trashmob room where you had to get the torches.

it will be nice for powerleveling, but blizz, please understand, some of us like the game as a whole, not just endgame.
