I was lucky enough to win the tourny on my very first try while on a medium population server.
I used this guide: Kalu'ak Fishing Derby - El's Extreme Anglin' - WoW Fishing Guide
As far as on how good it is, I have 4 twinks and I only use it on my hunter and sometimes my rogue. Just for the hit and crit.
Now as far as AGM trink's go, Everytime I go to the Arena, there are at least 6-10 level 85's camping the chest just for pure sport. They seem to have a hard on for killing twinks.

Srsly i want the ring so badly to become BiS! and the AGM trink is anyouing on BH so many 85s. So you iwll get there someday, userly no 85s at 6am

I have a few people on my new server ask to buy my twink account just for the ring. Seriously, what would an account be worth that had a few 19's and this ring?

i got lucky on the ring, was doing 10 day wotlk trial, did the contest and caught a black tip shark on the coast of howling ford, hearthed to dalaran and won. it was caught in open water not from a school.
as for the AGM, reading many threads that have players charging up to 12000g per AM/chest, players camping it: for Tmog gear, for spite, or XX numbers of twinks constantly there can be aggravating.
imo best way for AGM's, since most players are gonna faction swap anyway for gear, i recommend starting twinks on crap low pop servers, getting your AGMs and faction gear, then server/faction swapping to the server you want to play on. this costs the same as doing it on a hi pop server.
there are plenty of extreme low pop servers right now, take advantage of it cause blizz has posted they are looking to address the issue along with extreme imbal servers
