Can someone share with me how annoying it would be to grind to lvl 20 in the starting area? Maybe share some secrets on making the process easier or faster?

There's a guide from a while ago https://xpoff.com/threads/20s-dh-guide-shadowlands.96959/. Even killing normal mobs there to level isn't too bad (or wasn't)

It's easy af. I'd say 4 hours max, & that's counting AFK'ing & idling around for mental breaks.
Just make sure you grind to 17-18 before you grab https://www.wowhead.com/quest=39663/on-felbat-wings
Your best bet is to grind around the big area where https://www.wowhead.com/npc=97057/overseer-brutarg is. , or head up & down the road around https://www.wowhead.com/npc=97058/count-nefarious & https://www.wowhead.com/npc=97370/general-volroth ; both of whom you can kill repeatedly for good xp.
It's a short enough grind that it bears consideration to try to get an Epic proc on https://www.wowhead.com/item=128958/lekos-leash?bonus=4815 .
