Define "Exploit"

We had a topic on defining "burst" by Gracob a few days ago and I figured it wouldn't be a bad idea to dedicate a topic to the meaning of "exploit" in the context of twinking. Here is my definition.

Exploiting is the act of taking advantage of game mechanics in a way that wasn't an intended possibility by Blizzard's programmers. They are often based on unintended inbalance, making use of bugs and dumb luck. Some exploits are available to everyone and some are only available to those with luck. Money and having friends are not considered limiting factors as everyone putting enough effort in this would be able to obtain them.

I am not going to give examples of exploits, I think over time I've been very open about what I think about them.

I don't really understand what you mean? Maybe cause I'm not the best at english xD

Well, thank you very much - I understand know. But it's just all cheating?

Well, you could call it cheating i guess. It's like Rayu said, using game mechanics in a way they wont desinged to. You could call it abusing or bug abuse too. Most people see what's an exploit and what's not but this doesnt hold em back from abusing the given fact. We just have to wait till Blizzard fixes those ingame causalities (like this time when you could get 80s leg-armors on BoE gear). Some things are not that grave but others (just remeber Entis) disturb the balance ingame and shouldn't be used. Who decides what's useable and what's not? Well that's an eternal discussion. =)

Ya ... i mentioned the 80s leg enchants. You had to cast it one BoE gear, which makes it soulbound, then make it broken, send it broken to your toon, repair it and its soulbound to your toon. Now tell me, is this "legal"? (@ gr1pp)

*cough* smart use of game mechanisms *cough*

btw, you still whining over that fishing contest Rayu? Move on mate.. we have.

It's not a game mechanic. It is a bug. The "unintended use of game mechanics" clause would be a loophole in what is there already, which is not the case here.

Blizzard didn't go into a meeting one day and say "You know what would be a great use of our resources? Making it so that the soulbinding effect of an enchant would bug out when applied to an item with durability."

Just because it's there doesn't make it fair game, else we would all just steal everything and kill everyone IRL.

And as for your "we have all moved one", who is this "we" referring to? "We retarded selfish pricks of the world"?

1. If it's in the game, and you can get it without using a third party program, it's 100% perfectly fine to use.

2. The real reason some twinks like to call perfectly legit things "exploits" is, because they don't got it themselves and/or like making up excuses for their failure instead of just admitting that they're terrible players.

What's this got to do with anything?

And what about the epic shirt that killed things?

Or because they want to idealise twinking into something in which the goalposts aren't constantly moving. This is in order to make it 100% about playing and less about grinding... Pity about all the masochists who get off on the amount of dull and pointless crap twinks have to do (picking 100s of flowers is rly fun yus)

Are you just dump or dont you understand the fact, that we are talking about BUGS not about normal stuff ppl can get (like the tbc legarmors or whatever).

I'm just going to say 'read the first post' and it should be clear to anyone with some knowledge of the English language that gear that requires you to be more lucky than Blizzard has intended is unfair to use.

I am not talking about 450 professions pre-nerf because everyone could obtain those, or about leg armors, because everyone was able to get them. But things like level 80 fishing poles that have a 0.001% chance to ever be obtained by a random twink that make druids extremely OP are things we really don't want to see happening in this bracket.

I guess I was right.

In my mind, if you think it is an exploit, it probably is.

If it takes more than 3 seconds to do and requires ''clever use of ingame mechanics'' then its an exploit.

Also, if the community frowns upon it, then it can also be considered an exploit.

450 professions - legit (never got)

BC leg armors - legit (had many)

Librams - legit (had a few)

Fishing gear from STV - legit (had / have)

Mining bug - exploit (didn't do)

Enti- exploit (did)

WotLK leg armors - Exploit (Didn't do)

WotLK fishing gear - Exploit (Haven't yet... will try if they don't do something)

Twinking in general = exploitation in its purest form.

Can only agree with that.

When the very first guy thought "Hey I'll put a lvl 60 end game enchant on a lvl 19 sword to pwn noobs" he exploited unintended game mechanics. :)
