best realms for 20s

  • Coming back from a good break and looking to get back into 10s/20s and other levels if active but mostly 20 for my OG druid. Where are some good communities for 20s?

Realm is somewhat pointless these days.

Discord channels and in game communities are a primary way people connect in game.

If you’re in NA, then I’d consider looking into Golden Twinkies, they have an active discord community and organize lv 20 wargames 2 nights a week as well as other community and guild events.

There is also an in game community (called US20s) where most 20s hang out while online to help with gearing and the occasional random BG and recently there is another group is getting off the ground with organizing an additional night of 20s wargames too.

    Welcome back!

imo realms matter based on what you want to see, get, do, etc

see: high full pop realms you tend to see other players in main cities, and also cause competition on rares, etc, at world events like the one in tanaris, there were players on the world rares, i was able to get tags. on players i have on low to high pop servers i went there and the area was overall a ghost town, tich and sarg servers that are supposedly on high pop still a ghost area. matters when you can't use group finder

get: RP realms are not merged, i have a 20 who got TLP, kodo, Phos drake, slyvern and more with ease. the RP realm i picked is absolutely dead, rarely see anybody anywhere, if i go to SW and see 1-2, that is also rare. only made one player, now that there is nothing currently for me to target, i no longer log it

i have 20s on what blizz shows medium that are merged with 5 other servers that includes some of my 20s that were once on low pop flagged servers that now show medium or high, even those overall dead

To add to this [Chelly's post above is a good answer to the OP's question]:

On any server, including a low population server, it's possible to use the /who chat command to find where players from your current server are located [/who only shows characters that are at or above level 20]. Given that, one can use /who to get a decent idea of player count in any location, though the /who list will list no more than 50 characters.

For example, [/who Ashenvale] will show if there's any players from your server in Ashenvale now. Similar deal with [/who 'zone'] for any 'zone' of choice.

One can also /who based on level. Like one can [/who 20] to see if there's any players level 20 or so on your server [or /who 20-N for players of levels between 20 and N], as well as show which zones they're currently at [including if currently in a dungeon zone for LFD/etc].

That said, even if two characters from the same server are in the same zone, they can have trouble seeing each other due to zone phasing hiccups. As one example, two characters playing in different chromie time, or one warmode-on and the other warmode-off, will not see each other in a zone.

In brief summary about /who command, as a way to get an idea of a server's level of activity or active player counts:
-It can list up to 50 characters at most, and only those level 20 or above.
-It'll only list characters in a zone from your server. If a zone is cross-realmed with other realms, /who won't show characters from other servers in that zone.
-One can narrow their /who search based on either character level, or zone location.

I guess it’s also important to say that being on a high pop realm (such as Bleeding Hollow for N.A.) is important for a more populated auction house and twink farming economy.

While twink BOEs really haven’t been popular for the past 2 expansions because of reduced activity and prevalence of dungeon gear as bis, it’s possible that midnight might bring a shift back to BOEs for 20s (but nothing that I’ve seen yet would make me say for certain)

alot of the realm population labels blizz puts on them is fake

with no major player increase, years back they bumped alot of servers from low to med, from med to high, some med to full and high to full. prior to this there were only 5-7 actual full pop servers. some youtubers commented on this when this occurred which i think was around BFA? asmogold was commenting on this when his server got the status change increase, etc. and dead

from vague memory actual full pops were illidan, area52, zuljin, thrall, stormrage, moonglade. with players scattered on numerous servers those imo are still true full pop servers, especially illidan and A52. MG though i think has slipped some

when the pre patch and then expac rolls and you are not in a very long que to log, you are on a fake labeled full and high pop server. i have players who are affected. but being unsubbed and not worried about the expac, race for gear, etc. i'm not affected i have players on other servers that can insta log.
