A few friends and I are about to jump into the 29 scene. Where do we start?

I'm not a stranger to twinking (though I've mainly done 19s), so I understand the basics.

As far as gearing, do you have any tips?

Anything we should pick up or do on the way up?

Engineering is basically a requirement, what about the second profession slot?

I main rogue in everything, cap, 19, 39 (but it was years ago), is sub viable?

Is there a server best suited as home for alliance 29s? I've checked the realms in the list during what I consider peak and /who 29 always returns zero characters.

To start - grab a set of heirlooms/dungeon drops at 29. As you level up, save any quests that give a blue reward as you can turn it in at level 29 for the scaled version. You have access to WSG and AB vendor gear as well. If you go quick, you can get some trinkets from the brewfest holiday (though I don't think any are BiS). AFAIK there isn't a gear guide out for 29s, but looking at the armory thread might help.

Engineering is BiS, but not a requirement to play/start. If you're not set on which class you want to play, consider holding off on engineering and trying a few different classes first, and then getting engineering once you've picked something you really want to take the time/money to level engineering.

Alchemy is probably the best second profession. At max level, there is a reusable flask that is pretty sweet.

I don't think /who has worked properly for a while now. Its pretty weird.

I don't know the best server for 29s - but you should specify US or EU so someone can answer properly.

This was great information. We're US. I didn't think about saving blue quest rewards until 29, that's genius. Is there an ilvl we are aiming for? Do the high ilvl white items still boost stats in BGs? I hope not, because that seemed very lame to me.

I think we're set on a few classes each. Personally, I want a boomkin, a sub rogue, and an arms warrior.

Glad to help. Ilvl no longer directly correlates with stats in BGs, so yay! No white rings or necks or anything. Stats are actually stats. Many pieces of gear will follow the general pattern of having some primary stat, some stam, and usually some of two different secondaries (though sometimes only 1). Most greens, most dungeon gear, heirlooms, rewards from BG crates and dungeon satchels. So where applicable, you'll obviously want the highest ilvl you can get, which is usually 29 greens/blues....which are ilvl 33 or 34 (can't remember off the top of my head). And then obviously you'll want ones with the desired secondaries (which depend on class/spec/preference - but usually can't go wrong with verse being the primary).

BG crates can drop greens (not bad, but unremarkable) and blues (usually BiS, slightly higher ilvl than normal lvl 29 gear). So those are often BiS. Especially mainhand weapons for things like rogue, where weapon damage comes into play.

Some quest gear and BoEs don't follow that pattern - so true BiS often involves a few of those pieces. This is where a guide would come in handy. I know a lot of the 19 ones, but not the 29s unfortunately. Keep an eye on the AH for 26-29 BoEs with non-standard stats and see if they might be good. Something with higher than normal primary/stam and no secondaries might be useful. Something with no stam but int and haste might be a glass cannon caster BiS. Theres usually some primary only gear for glass cannon rogues and stuff. But remember thats all BiS and filling out niche sets - for the most part you should be good with heirlooms/dungeon gear/BG crates.

AFAIK, boomkin is godlike, arms/fury are solid. At 19 only outlaw rogue is viable. I know either assassin or sub gets a lot of important skills in 20-29, but I'm not sure which. The good news is that you can gear them all up somewhat, then actually pick the one you like.

I'd also take a look at the armories found in the stickied thread in the 20-29 section. It should give you an idea of what some people are running and some of the options. It might also help you find servers. My guess is bleeding hollow is the most active. But for the same reason any BoE gear is always expensive. Really expensive.

And then you can read the assumptions/sources sections of the 19s guide in my sig. The actual gear won't be too helpful for 29s - but a lot of the gotchas are the same (the way minor speed vs boar's speed works, glove reinforcements, neck/rings with primary stats, etc).

Holy crap man, thank you so much. This is exactly the information I was looking for. I think we'll stay on our low pop realm then. That way it will be cheaper to snag good stuff. If we went to BH, we'd be totally broke, anyway.
 
I've learned they aren't the best. There's clearly not a cookie cutter build for everything, which I like. I'm stacking vers on a boomie and it seems to work out just fine, but I do want to try all 3 stats.
 
This bracket is almost as shit as 19s atm

@Prizefighter I know this isn't what you asked, but have you considered 39 instead? Reason I mention this is I believe it to be a healthier and more fun bracket than the previous two. Reasons for this are: You have access to your second row of talents which provides a little more diversity and depth to playstyle. This is the first bracket where you can use the new scaled epics, which although they are not necessary to have a well geared character, do provide that little extra edge over the competition, as well as swag factor. Gearing and leveling are still quick and easy. The games are similarly paced with the 60% speed mount, which is nice as it's not the snails pace that is 19s. And finally a big selling point to me is that although 39 is not the most popular bracket, it's still among the most active, and drama is at a minimum.

I have fun with PvP in general, at level cap or twinking, but definitely more at low levels. The interest is there for other brackets, but if we roll a new bracket, it will probably be on another server. We rolled 29s where are mains were (for ease of access), but I would love to be on one of the full realms so I can roam in warmode between queues.

it takes a few hours to lvl to 20, and about the same amount of time for every 9 lvls further
okeish gear for all classes is literally lying all around
no need to do 20 step quest chains with lvl xp calculation, farm those retarded head enchants through all the dungeons of azeroth, craft extremely rare and pricy items, stalk rare ultimate bis items
its all came down to abusing exploits and collecting cosmetics now
what a joke of a game
cant wait to see classic realm twinking xd

Well, as I stated previously, I have a 39 already, on alliance side. The queues are too long for me. We all work full time and don't have all the time in the world to play, so getting everyone on board for 29 is all the success I need for twinking right now.

Besides, I know how easy it is compared to the old days. I had 3 19 twinks in vanilla, full bis. Holy paladin, rogue, and mage. I remember it fondly, and look forward to it in classic. If it was that much work nowadays, they would NEVER have rolled 29s with me.
 
that queue thing u guys talking about is a bit confusing to me, eu player
we don't have any 39 activity at all compared to us, but the q time on a well populated servers is below 10 mins
i'm considering to shift overseas sometimes in order to join 39-49 brackets but 200ms latency is a thing
