A couple gearing questions from a new F2P Rogue

Annierexia

Legend
Greetings all,

I have been digging for a while on this site, including looking at armories that have been linked, yet have still not found a concrete answer to the following questions.

First, how important is crit rating? Specifically, I'm currently using satchel belt and cloak of the monkey, not bandit.

Second, there seems to be a toss up between the PvP and PvE heirloom shoulders. Any clarity here would be nice, as I am nearing the amount of honor needed to purchase one or the other.

Third, how on earth do you get an AGM trinket on AP server? It seems like there is always someone with an 85 friend helping them out.

Lastly, how important is a throwing weapon with crippling poison? I can't recall a situation where my BG unit has worked together well enough to need a ranged kite skill from a rogue. It almost always seems to degenerate into 1v1 combat where the stats on a bow would outshine a crippling throwing weapon with +2 str.

Thanks for your time on these questions. I've provided an armory link to myself below, so you can have a look-see at the gear I'm currently wearing and offer some advice.

I forgot to mention that I D/E'd the quest bow from BFD, back when I was convinced that rogues should only use throwing weapons, so that is no longer an option.

I tried to edit my post but could not see where to add the text.

-Bandit cloak & belt
-Thick Bronze Darts
-Ring of Precision, Doomspike
-AGM

I'd use Black Wolf Bracers over Serra'kis. Foreman's Gloves are good to have. I like the Shadowcraft shoulders too.

Have fun with that.

I get at least 2 uses of crippling poison on throwing weapons every BG. I'd say an average of around 5 uses.

lol when would you even use thrown in bg.

Thrown is used when someone is trying to kite you, and you cannot do any dmg what so ever. This is when you use ur throwing weapon if you cannot get any ToT on them.
Thrown is also used when you're trying to get a quick hit on someone who is trying to run from you.

Due to the fact that thrown has the best recoil(meaning you can use it more than bows/guns/crossbows) and takes the least amount of time to "recharge" itself, it's more valuable than bows/crossbows/guns/etc regardless of the stats. Even if the non-throwing weapon is faster than the throwing weapon, you'll still be able to use it more/faster than the non-throwing weapon due the recoil(it takes less time to recharge).

Throwing Wep > Ranged Weapons, even if the stats are better.

Of course, this doesn't apply to War FCs since their main priority is survival but we are specifically talking about rogues.

For rogues, you'll want a throwing weapon. Apply crippling to it. When someone is trying to run away from you, you can use it(and it's much faster than any other ranged wep) to either:

A. Kill them because they have low health but out of your melee range w/ SS on CD.
or
B. Apply a crippling poison on them so that they cant run away(or at least very fast)
or
C. Keep them in combat so that they cant mount/stealth/charge.

That all being said:

Horde BiS Throwing Wep: Sludge-Caked Throwing Knives - Item - World of Warcraft
Alliance BiS Throwing Wep: Thick Bronze Darts - Item - World of Warcraft

Hunter, not that anyone here thinks you have absolutely no experience with PvP; but Mialo is right. Throwing wep > other ranged weps for rogues.

Just because the weapon has better stats, does not mean it's better for PvP. For rogues, at levels 15-85s for PvP, Throwing weapon is BiS over any other ranged weapons.

Didn't mean to start a flame war...

Anyways I guess I have yet to be in a situation where I wished that I had a throwing weapon to finish someone off. Also, If it is not a EFC i'm chasing, i'd just take the opportunity to leave combat and re-stealth. If it is an EFC, and they've gotten away from me despite crippling poison, sprint, and SS, then It is likely I did not have any support from my team members.

Back to the shoulders question, I'm about two days out from buying my set. Can I get a few more opinions on the PvP vs PvE ones? Seems like PvP ones are more popular in BG's.

most rogues in this bracket use a gun/bow.
guns/bows provide more stats.
sounds like ur the baddie minority in the bracket that uses thrown weapons

Rogues should be using thrown, bows are far too slow.

To be frank, most people choose boa pvp shoulders because they cost a thousand less honor.

However, the reason people suggest going for the pve shoulders is because the hit on them will increase your white attacks chance to hit. In my experience, a rogue's survival is dependent on its ability to dish out damage - getting closer towards hitcapping white attacks (and special attacks versus 24s) helps more than the tiny amount of survival the resilience would provide.

Thanks for all your help answering these questions. Rsq, you made a lot of sense when talking about PvP vs. PvE shoulders, and i appreciate that. However, I'm still not sold on the throwing weapon vs bow. I can see how it might be handy if I really wanted to finish off a low target from afar when sprint and SS are down, but that honestly doesn't happen much.

Regarding the AGM, does anyone have an 85 buddy that would help out? Lol, it honestly seems impossible to get on AP server. Although, I have yet to try it at 3AM or 6AM server time.

Crippling poison is so important.

Having a ranged crippling poison, that's quick and long range is a must imo.

Then again, I'm combat LOL

i guess you are not the only one having this idea ; of course there will be less competition at those times ;)

Most ppl from EU are online @ that time on AP, since is something like 11-13PM in EU (depending on time zone)
Its much less competition, that true, but don't expect less then 5+ ppl there :)

Well, I decided to buy my offhand dagger first, so I could have a little more time to think about the shoulder purchase. I'm reviving this thread in an attempt to spark a discussion on PvE vs PvP heirloom shoulders, as there is currently only one opinion in this thread about them. It seems to me, that BG's are dominated by leather wearers in PvP shoulders, yet i've heard good arguments about the extra point of agi and 4 hit. Please share your opinions!

PVE & PVP shoulders all are dependant on playstyle. Most Rogues play the "Get in & GTFO" tactic. However, there are some Rogues, like Medan, who will gear for more survival and sit in combat more.
