39 Ret paladin Question

Alrighty Twinkinfo community, I was on the wow forums for 39 bracket and the thread turned into a troll thread so I stopped posting there and now I'm posting here.

The question is, does Stacking Attack Power vs Stacking health(survival) make you have more survival?

Sacred Shield increases the amount of damage it absorbs with this: ((1) + (AP×2.8))

Now I thought a good way to determine if stacking AP vs stacking health would be using the same items, but different enchantments/gearstats.

I got this(Test1): chardev 8 - WoW Cataclysm

I got this(Test2): chardev 8 - WoW Cataclysm

Test1: AP = 697

Test2: AP = 621

Now a good way to see the difference would be, adding the health and adding the sacred shield buff together and seeing which one gives the bigger number(IE: better survival)

Test1: SS + Health = 1951.6 + 2509 = 4460.6

Test2: SS + Health = 1738.8 + 2949 = 4687.8

Test2 has a 4.85% increase of survival(Sacred Shield + Health) while Test1 has a 10.90% increase of attack power.

Now I am trying to decide if a 4.85% increase of survival(Sacred Shield + Health) is better than an increase of 10.90% of AP.

Now normally I side with this: Survival is King is PvP, it'll give your healers more time to heal you which means you get more time to DPS.

But right now I am considering to side with this: A good Defense is a good Offense.

Your DPS is far better with Test1, which means your enemies die faster...but Test2 lets you live longer but your DPS increase more than twice the amount of the amount of survival increase. So in theory, would stacking AP benefit you more than stacking health in the average PuG game?

If this is confusing then let me say this:

For Revelosh Boots of the Bear you have 2 Primary choices for BiS: 9str/8stam vs 9stam/8str.

18 AP/80 Health vs 16 AP/90 Health.

((1) + (AP×2.8)) = Sacred Shield

80 + ((1) + (18×2.8)) = 130.4(survival) = More DPS less Survival

90 + ((1) + (16×2.8)) = 134.8(survival) = More Survival less DPS

I think my math may be totally wrong, perhaps a math-wiz could come in here and solve this theory im trying to crack.

Fire Mages are able to stack Spell Power over Stamina because of Cauterize. When they are killed, they are instead brought to 40% of their life while losing only 12% of their life over 6 seconds. And those who play in the 39 bracket know exactly how effective that is.

My theory that I'm trying to Crack is, by Stacking AP instead of Health you can increase the amount of damage your Sacred Shield absorbs. In other words, by increasing your DPS at the cost of your Survival, you can increase your survival...

Basically my question is, can Ret Paladins do the same thing Fire Mages do because of Sacred Shield? Or is Sacred Shield not enough?

Can someone help me crack this code please.

Cauterize is actually 48% of your health over 6 seconds. It's 12% every 1.5 seconds.

That wasn't very helpful.

It's still information that doesn't need to be incorrect. The difference between cauterize killing you and just hurting you is pretty big.

K ty anyways.

Bump it up.

Need a mathwize to tell us if stacking AP to increase the amount of dmg that Sacred Shield absorbs allows you to still have good survival in glasscannon gear.

There is no mathematical equation that can solve this issue. There are too many variables in every fight to give you a number that can be compared. Even if someone were to take massive amounts of recount data, it still wouldn't really reflect what actually happens out in the field.

This is the problem that I have referred to in the past when we have argued about how stats should be weighted. At the end of the day, it's all about what your experience suggests is the most effective.

My opinion remains the same: As long as you are able to stay alive long enough to be effective in most scenarios, I think you are always better off stacking AP/SP/etc. The faster you kill someone, the faster you can move on to the next task.
