I think that Gold/Silver were quite well crafted. Nothing beats R/B/Y but they comes close since you can go back to Kanto.

Indeed gold/silver are my all time favs.I mean the gym leaders are cool, they rnt using simple pokemon like water/rock etc, in silver/gold they mixed it up with flying, bug, steel gyms.
